Abstract

An apparatus includes a printed circuit board with a plurality of printed circuit board traces, a memory controller mounted on the printed circuit board coupled to one or more of the plurality of printed circuit board traces, a plurality of non-volatile type of memory integrated circuits coupled to the printed circuit board, and a plurality of support integrated circuits coupled between the memory controller and the plurality of non-volatile type of memory integrated circuits.

Claims (33)

1. A method of upgrading a computer system, the method comprising:

plugging a main memory expansion board into an expansion socket of a mother-board to expand main memory of the mother board, the main memory expansion board having a memory controller to control read and write accesses to non-volatile memory modules;

plugging a plurality of non-volatile memory modules into memory module sockets of the main memory expansion board, the memory module sockets coupled to the memory controller by printed circuit board traces of the main memory expansion board; and

randomly accessing the non-volatile memory modules in the main memory expansion board into which data is stored periodically using a data communication protocol for non-volatile memory modules.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the non-volatile memory modules include NOR flash electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the data communication protocol to access the non-volatile memory modules supports a write access time greater than a write access time of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) memory modules.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein

the data communication protocol to access non-volatile memory modules includes a status signal to indicate when a rank of memory in a non-volatile memory module is busy performing an operation.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein

the data communication protocol to access non-volatile memory modules includes a status signal to indicate when a rank of memory in a non-volatile memory module is ready to perform an operation.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein

a read access time of the non-volatile memory modules is equal to twice a read access time of the DRAM memory modules.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the mother-board includes dynamic random access memory (DRAM) memory modules, and

the method further includes

randomly accessing the DRAM memory modules of the mother-board into which data is stored periodically using a data communication protocol for DRAM memory modules.

8. A method of assembling a printed circuit board assembly, the method comprising:

mounting a plurality of randomly accessible non-volatile memory integrated circuits to a printed circuit board coupled to printed circuit board traces of the printed circuit board;

mounting a non-DRAM memory controller to the printed circuit board coupled to printed circuit board traces of the printed circuit board;

mounting a plurality of support chips to the printed circuit board coupled to printed circuit board traces between the non-DRAM memory controller and the plurality of non-volatile memory integrated circuits, the support chips to buffer addresses and data, and multiplex and de-multiplex data to and from the plurality of randomly accessible non-volatile memory integrated circuits; and

wherein the non-DRAM memory controller is used to control read and write accesses in parallel to at least two of the plurality of randomly accessible non-volatile memory integrated circuits.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein

the plurality of non-volatile memory integrated circuits are NOR flash electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) integrated circuits.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein

a data communication protocol to access the plurality of non-volatile memory integrated circuits supports a write access time greater than a write access time of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) integrated circuits.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein

a read access time of the plurality of non-volatile memory integrated circuits is equal to twice a read access time of the DRAM integrated circuits.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

coupling an edge connector to the printed circuit board, the edge connector in communication with the non-DRAM memory controller.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

forming an edge connector in the printed circuit board, the edge connector coupled to the non-DRAM memory controller.
