Abstract

A communication system having first and second states for use with a shared transmission line composed of at least two conductors and composed of first and second transmission line segments connected to each other at a single connection point. In the first state, a termination is coupled to the single connection point and is operative to at least attenuate a signal propagated between the first and second segments. In the second state, a driver is coupled to the connection point and is operative to conduct a signal over the first and second segments.

Claims (20)

1. A device for connection to an existing telephone wire pair in walls of a building via a telephone connector of a telephone outlet the telephone wire pair being connected to the telephone wire pair and the telephone wire pair being connected in a bus topology for carrying a digital data signal, said device comprising:

a connector for connecting to the outlet telephone connecting for coupling to the digital data signal carried over the telephone wire pair; and

a termination circuit selectively couplable to said connector and constructed for terminating the digital data signal propagated over the telephone wire pair when said device is connected to said telephone connector, wherein said device has a first state in which said termination circuit is coupled to said connector and a second state in which said termination circuit is not coupled to said connector.

2. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a a sensor having sensor inputs and a sensor output, said sensor inputs being coupled to said connector, said sensor being operative for sensing the presence of a digital data signal at said connector and for supplying to said sensor output a signal that is a function of the data signal that is sensed.

3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein said termination circuit comprises:

a driver having a driver input and a driver output, said driver output being couplable to said connector for placing a signal on the telephone wire pair; and

a processing unit coupled to said sensor output and to said driver input, and operative to supply said driver input with a signal that is effective to at least attenuate the digital data signal on the telephone wire pair at the connector.

4. The device according to claim 3 , further comprising a receiver port coupled to said processing unit, and wherein said processing unit is operative in said first state to generate a signal that is a representation of the attenuated data signal and to supply the generated signal to said receiver port.

5. The device according to claim 3 , further comprising a data unit port coupled to said processing unit and operative for coupling a data unit to the telephone wire pair.

6. A communication system having first and second operating states for use with an existing telephone wire pair in walls of a building, the telephone wire pair being connected in a bus topology for carrying a digital data signal, said system comprising:

a telephone outlet comprising a telephone connector;

first and second segments of the telephone wire pair, said first and second segments being connected to each other at said telephone connector to form a continuous transmission line on which the digital data a\signal can be propagated between the first and second segments; and

a termination device selectively couplable to said telephone connector and, when coupled to said telephone connector, operative to at least attenuate the digital data signal propagated between said first and second telephone wire pair segments,

wherein in the first operating state said termination device is coupled to said telephone connector, and in the second operating state said termination device is decoupled from said telephone connector.

7. The communication system according to claim 6 further comprising a sensor having sensor inputs and a sensor output, said sensor inputs being coupled to said telephone connector, said sensor being operative for sensing a signal at said telephone connector and for supplying to said sensor output a signal that is a representation of the signal that is sensed.

8. The communication system according to claim 7 , wherein said termination device further comprises:

a driver selectively couplable to said telephone connector and, when coupled to said telephone connector, operative to conduct a signal over said first and second telephone wire pair segments.

9. The communication system according to claim 6 , wherein said termination device further comprises a data unit port coupled to said telephone connector, said data unit port being operative to couple a data unit to said first and second telephone wire pair segments.

10. The communication system according to claim 6 , further comprising at least a third telephone wire pair segment connected to said telephone connector.

11. The communication system according to claim 10 , wherein at least one of said telephone wire pair segments is open-ended at an end remote from said telephone connector.
