Abstract

A gas control and operation method of a fuel cell system for improved water and gas distribution is disclosed. The present invention provides for a mechanization of a fuel cell system that allows control of the anode reactant and anode effluent through the anode portions of the fuel cell system to improve water and gas distribution on the anode side of the fuel cells that increases the voltage stability of the fuel cells.

Claims (27)

1. A method of operating a fuel cell system having at least one cathode section and at least two anode sections which are operable to convert an oxidant-containing cathode reactant and a hydrogen-containing anode reactant into electricity, a cathode effluent and an anode effluent, the method comprising:

(a) supplying a first anode reactant feed stream to a first anode section of the at least two anode sections through a first flow path that communicates with a first inlet to the first anode section;

(b) supplying a second anode reactant feed stream to a second anode section of the at least two anode sections through a second flow path that communicates with a second inlet to the second anode section;

(c) supplying an anode effluent from one of said first and second anode sections to the other of said first and second anode sections through a third flow path connecting a first outlet of the first anode section to a second outlet of the second anode section without passing through an anode section, the third flow path providing flow communication between the first and second anode sections through the first and second outlets; and

(d) adjusting a quantity of at least one of said first and second anode reactant feed streams being supplied, so that, alternately, the one and then the other of the first and second anode sections receives the anode effluent.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selectively venting anode effluent from the fuel cell system.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein selectively venting anode effluent includes continuously venting at least a portion of the anode effluent from the fuel cell system.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein selectively venting anode effluent includes burping the fuel cell system.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein selectively venting anode effluent includes discontinuously venting anode effluent.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein selectively venting anode effluent includes regulating a quantity of anode effluent vented from the fuel cell system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting includes varying the respective quantities based on an operating parameter of the fuel cell system.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the operating parameter is a voltage stability of at least one of the anode sections.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating at least a portion of water contained in the anode effluent from the anode effluent of at least one of the first and second anode sections prior to supplying the anode effluent to the other anode section.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting is based on one of empirical data and an algorithm.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting occurs at a predetermined interval.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting of the first and second anode reactant feed streams achieves up to about 120% of a hydrogen stoichiometric requirement of the fuel cell system.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising supplying a third anode reactant feed stream to the third flow path without the third anode reactant feed stream flowing through an anode section prior to reaching the third flow path and wherein adjusting includes adjusting the quantity of at least one of the first, second and third anode reactant feed streams.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adjusting includes modulating the first anode reactant feed stream flowing through the first flow path with a first device, modulating the second anode reactant feed stream flowing through the second flow path with a second device, and modulating the third anode reactant feed stream flowing into the third flow path with a third device.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein all of the anode reactant flowing into the first inlet flows through the first flow path, all of the anode reactant flowing into the second inlet flows through the second flow path and wherein adjusting includes modulating the first anode reactant feed stream flowing through the first flow path with a first device that modulates all fluid flow through the first flow path and modulating the second anode reactant feed stream flowing through the second flow path with a second device that modulates all fluid flow through the second flow path.

16. A method of operating a fuel cell system having at least one cathode section and at least two anode sections which are operable to convert an oxidant-containing cathode reactant and a hydrogen-containing anode reactant into electricity, a cathode effluent and an anode effluent, comprising:

(a) supplying a first anode reactant feed stream to a first anode section of the at least two anode sections through a first flow path that communicates with a first inlet to the first anode section;

(b) supplying a second anode reactant feed stream to a second anode section of the at least two anode sections through a second flow path that communicates with a second inlet to the second anode section;

(c) supplying at least one of:

(i) an anode effluent from one of said first and second anode sections to the other of said first and second anode sections and

(ii) a third anode reactant feed stream

through a third flow path connecting a first outlet of the first anode section to a second outlet of the second anode section without passing through an anode section, the third flow path providing flow communication between the first and second anode sections through the first and second outlets; and

(d) adjusting a quantity of at least one of said first, second, and third anode reactant feed streams being supplied with the proviso that, if the third anode reactant feed stream is not supplied through the third flow path then said adjusting causes, alternately, the one and then the other of the first and second anode sections to receive the anode effluent.
