Abstract

A method for detecting and correcting for a step loss condition. A back electromagnetic force signal is measured and compared to a reference voltage. The motor continues operating and the back electromagnetic force signal is measured again and compared to the reference voltage. If the measured levels of the back emf voltages are less than the reference voltage, a step loss condition has occurred and the stator field is repositioned.

Claims (14)

1. A method for detecting a fault condition in a motor, comprising:

providing a time-varying parameter of an energy storage device;

comparing an electromagnetic force signal with a first reference signal at a first time in response to the time-varying parameter being at a predetermined level;

comparing the electromagnetic force signal with one of the first reference signal or a second reference signal at a second time in response to the time-varying parameter being at the predetermined level; and

determining that the fault condition has occurred in response to the electromagnetic force signal at the first time being less than the first reference signal and the electromagnetic force signal at the second time being less than the second reference signal or in response to the electromagnetic force signal at the first time being greater than the first reference signal and the electromagnetic force signal at the second time being greater than the second reference signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first time-varying parameter is an inductor current.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first time is a zero crossing of the time-varying parameter and the second time is another zero crossing of the time-varying parameter.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the zero crossing and the another zero crossing are consecutive zero crossings.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic force signal is determined from a sample of one of a back electromagnetic force voltage sample or an arithmetic parameter of a plurality of back electromagnetic force voltage samples at the first time and at the second time.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the arithmetic parameter includes an arithmetic parameter selected from the group of arithmetic parameters comprising an average, a mean, an integral, a minimum, a maximum, a filtered signal, and an amplitude of the group of samples comprising the back electromotive force voltage sample.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the fault condition occurred only in response to the electromagnetic force signal at the first time being greater than the first reference signal and the electromagnetic force signal at the second time being greater than the second reference signal.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first and second reference signals are equal.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the fault condition occurred only in response to the electromagnetic force signal at the first time being less than the first reference signal and the electromagnetic force signal at the second time being less than the second reference signal.

10. The method of claim 1 , further including repositioning a stator field after determining that the fault condition has occurred.
