Abstract

A luminescent particle includes an interior portion of the luminescent particle comprising a luminescent compound that reacts with atmospherically present components and a passivating layer on an outer surface of the luminescent particle that is operable to inhibit the reaction between the luminescent compound and the atmospherically present components.

Claims (20)

1. A method of providing a luminescent particle, the method comprising:

providing a luminescent particle comprising a nitride; and

heating the luminescent particle in boiling water to reduce a reactive characteristic of an outer surface of the luminescent particle.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein heating the luminescent particle in the boiling water to reduce a reactive characteristic of the outer surface of the luminescent particle comprises forming a passivating region on the outer surface of the luminescent particle.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the passivating region includes a greater percentage of oxygen than an interior portion of the luminescent particle.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein heating the luminescent particle in the boiling water comprises increasing a percentage of oxygen in the outer surface and decreasing a percentage of nitrogen in the outer surface.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the luminescent particle includes a phosphor composition that down-converts photons in the blue and ultraviolet portions of the visible spectrum into photons in the longer wavelength portions of the visible spectrum.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the luminescent particle includes a phosphor composition that absorbs in the blue portion of the visible spectrum and emits in the red portion of the visible spectrum.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing the luminescent particle comprises forming the luminescent particle at a temperature in a range from about 1500 degrees Centigrade to about 1850 degrees Centigrade.

8. A method of providing a luminescent particle, the method comprising:

providing a luminescent particle comprising a nitride; and

heating the luminescent particle in a boiling nitric acid solution having a concentration of less than about 0.1 mol/Liter to reduce a reactive characteristic of an outer surface of the luminescent particle.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein heating the luminescent particle in the boiling nitric acid solution to reduce a reactive characteristic of an outer surface of the luminescent particle comprises forming a passivating region on the outer surface of the luminescent particle.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the passivating region includes a greater percentage of oxygen than an interior portion of the luminescent particle.

11. A method of stabilizing a luminescent particle, the method comprising:

providing a luminescent particle comprising a host compound selected from the group consisting of Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 , Ca 2 Si 5 N 8 , Sr 2 Si 5 N 8 , Ba 2 Si 5 N 8 , BaSi 7 N 10 , BaYSi 4 N 7 , Y 5 (SiO 4 ) 3 N, Y 4 Si 2 O 7 N 2 , YSiO 2 N, Y 2 Si 3 O 3 N 4 , Ca 1.5 Si 9 Al 3 N 16 , Y 0.5 Si 9 Al 3 O 1.5 N 14.5 , CaSiN 2 , Y 2 Si 4 N 6 C, and/or Y 6 S 11 N 20 O, and at least one activator comprising Ce, Eu, Sm, Yb, Gd and/or Tb, and, wherein 0≦x<1; and

heating the luminescent particle in boiling water to reduce a reactive characteristic of an outer surface of the luminescent particle.

12. A method of stabilizing a luminescent particle, the method comprising:

providing a luminescent particle comprising a host compound selected from the group consisting of Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 , Ca 2 Si 5 N 8 , Sr 2 Si 5 N 8 , Ba 2 Si 5 N 8 , BaSi 7 N 10 BaYSi 4 N 7 , Y 5 (SiO 4 ) 3 N, Y 4 Si 2 O 7 N 2 , YSiO 2 N, Y 2 Si 3 O 3 N 4 , Ca 1.5 Si 9 Al 3 N 16 Y 0.5 Si 9 Al 3 O 1.5 N 14.5 , CaSiN 2 , Y 2 Si 4 N 6 C, and/or Y 6 S 11 N 20 O, and at least one activator comprising Ce, Eu, Sm, Yb, Gd and/or Tb, and, wherein 1≦x<1; and

heating the luminescent particle in a boiling nitric acid solution having a concentration of less than about 0.1 mol/Liter to reduce a reactive characteristic of an outer surface of the luminescent particle.
