The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or the medicament further comprises non-viable probiotic bacteria and/or probiotic-derived material, the probiotic-derived material selected from the group consisting of a cellular fraction isolated from probiotics, a compound isolated from probiotics, a group of compounds isolated from probiotics, material that was produced using probiotics that were cultivated in the material, a product that was modified using probiotics, and combinations thereof.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or the medicament further comprises a fermentation substrate of the probiotic.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or the medicament further comprises prebiotics.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the probiotic is present in an amount of about 10 5 -10 11 cfu/ml.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition further comprises a carbohydrate source, a lipid source and a protein source.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the protein source provides at least about 8% of the total calories of the composition, the lipid source provides at least about 18% of the total calories of the composition, and the carbohydrate source provides at least about 15% of the total calories of the composition.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or the medicament further comprises micronutrients selected from the group consisting of vitamin E, vitamin C and combinations thereof.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the individual to whom the nutritional composition or medicament is administered is suffering from colonic adenocarcinoma.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or medicament is administered to the individual before the individual undergoes colorectal surgery.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition or medicament is administered to the individual after the individual undergoes colorectal surgery.

13. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the protein source provides about 15%-25% of the total calories of the composition, the lipid source provides about 30%-50% of the total calories of the composition and has an omega 6 to 3 fatty acid ratio of approximately 2:1 to about 10:1, and the carbohydrate source provides about 20%-40% of the total calories of the composition.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the probiotic is present in an amount of about 10 6 -10 9 cfu/ml.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the probiotic is present in an amount of about 10 7 -10 8 cfu/ml.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the probiotic colonizes the colonic lumen and the mucosal surfaces of the colon.

17. A method for treating postsurgical abdominal-pelvic infections due to pelvic fluid collection secondary to leakiness in the anastomosis or bacterial translocation in an individual suffering from colonic adenocarcinoma, the method comprising administering to the individual before colorectal surgery and after colorectal surgery a nutritional composition or medicament comprising a probiotic comprising Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 (CNCM I-1225).

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the nutritional composition or medicament is administered to the individual suffering from colonic adenocarcinoma for three days before colorectal surgery and for twelve days after colorectal surgery.

19. A method for treating postsurgical abdominal-pelvic infections due to pelvic fluid collection secondary to leakiness in the anastomosis or bacterial translocation in an individual, the method comprising colonizing the colon of the individual with Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 (CNCM I-1225) by administering a dietary supplement comprising the Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 (CNCM I-1225) before and after colorectal surgery.
