Tobacco cultivar AOB 171
The present invention relates to a novel tobacco cultivar designated AOB 171, which has low to intermediate nicotine content. The invention provides seeds of the cultivar AOB 171, plants and parts thereof of the cultivar AOB 171, a tissue culture derived from the cultivar AOB 171, hybrids produced from cultivar AOB 171 and lines derived from cultivar AOB 171, as well as genetically modified forms of the foregoing plants and tissue culture. Also provided are methods of producing cultivar AOB 171 plants, cultivar AOB 171 hybrid plants, and tobacco lines derived from cultivar AOB 171. In addition, products produced from the plants of the present invention are provided.
1. A method for producing an AOB 171-derived tobacco plant comprising:
(a) crossing tobacco cultivar AOB 171, representative seed of said tobacco cultivar AOB 171 having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9588, with a second tobacco plant to yield progeny tobacco seed;
(b) growing said progeny tobacco seed, under plant growth conditions, to yield said AOB 171 -derived tobacco plant;
(c) crossing said AOB 171-derived tobacco plant with itself or another tobacco plant to yield additional AOB 171-derived progeny tobacco seed;
(d) growing said progeny tobacco seed of step (a) under plant growth conditions, to yield additional AOB 171-derived tobacco plants; and
(e) repeating the crossing and growing steps of (a) and (b) from 0 to 7 times to generate further AOB 171-derived tobacco plants.
2. A method of introducing a desired trait into tobacco cultivar AOB 171, comprising:
(a) crossing tobacco cultivar AOB 171, representative seed of said tobacco cultivar AOB 171 having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9588, with a second tobacco plant that comprises a desired trait to produce F1 progeny;
(b) selecting an F1 progeny that comprises the desired trait;
(c) crossing the selected F1 progeny with tobacco cultivar AOB 171, representative seed of said tobacco cultivar AOB 171 having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9588, to produce backcross progeny;
(d) selecting backcross progeny comprising the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of tobacco cultivar AOB 171; and
(e) repeating steps (c) and (d) from 0 to 7 times in succession to produce selected backcross progeny that comprise the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of tobacco cultivar AOB 171 when grown in the same environmental conditions.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the trait is selected from the group consisting of herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, nematode resistance, tolerance to abiotic stress, yield enhancement, improved leaf characteristics, altered reproductive capability, and altered chemical composition.
4. A tobacco plant produced by the method of claim 2 .
