Abstract

A method and system are provided for delivering digital content. A first cataloged list of content is delivered from a user operated device to a media storage device, and attributes of the first cataloged list are determined. A second cataloged list of content is delivered from a content provider to the media storage device. The first cataloged list is modified based upon the second cataloged list and the attributes, and the modified first cataloged list is delivered to the user operated device. Content from the modified first cataloged list is delivered to the user operated device for storage and subsequent playback.

Claims (66)

1. A method for updating a catalog of content stored on a portable device, the method comprising:

performing the following in a server in communication with at least one content provider and a portable device:

generating a plurality of delta files for a catalog of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein each delta file comprises an incremental file update to bring a previous update version of the catalog up-to-date:

receiving information from the portable device indicating which update version of the catalog is stored in the portable device;

selecting one of the plurality of delta files based on the information from the portable device;

sending the selected delta file to the portable device to update the catalog of content stored on the portable device; and

receiving a user selection from the catalog of content stored in the portable device, wherein the user selection can be made even while the portable device is disconnected from the server, and wherein the user selection is stored in the portable device until a connection can be established with the server.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising authenticating a user of the portable user-operated device prior to sending the delta file to the portable device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending of the delta file is performed by streaming the delta file to the portable device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending of the delta file is performed by downloading the delta file to the portable device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portable device comprises a wireless portable device.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising;

determining that the catalog of content on the portable device needs to be completely replaced; and

sending a replacement catalog of content to the portable device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises a version number.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises a last update time.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delta file further comprises information specifying how at least a portion of new data in the delta file is to be displayed on the portable device.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delta file further comprises information specifying that a visual element indicating new data is to be displayed along with at least some of the new data in the delta file.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delta file contains some but not all of the information needed to bring the catalog of content stored in the portable device up-to-date with respect to the catalog of content stored in the server.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the server decides which information to include in the delta file based on user behavior or preference information from the portable device.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the user preference information is indicated by a user selection of a button indicating a user's preference.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the information not included in the delta file is searchable on the server by the portable device when a connection is established between the server and the portable device.

15. A server comprising:

an interface operative to communicate with at least one content provider and a portable device; and

a processor operative to:

generate a plurality of delta files for a catalog of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein each delta file comprises an incremental file update to bring a previous update version of the catalog up-to-date:

receive information from the portable device indicating which update version of the catalog is stored in the portable device;

select one of the plurality of delta files based on the information from the portable device; and

send the selected delta file to the portable device to update the catalog of content stored on the portable device; and

receive a user selection from the catalog of content stored in the portable device, wherein the user selection can be made even while the portable device is disconnected from the server, and wherein the user selection is stored in the portable device until a connection can be established with the server.

16. The server of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further operative to authenticate a user of the portable device prior to sending the delta file to the portable device.

17. The server of claim 15 , wherein the sending of the delta file is performed by streaming the delta file to the portable device.

18. The server of claim 15 , wherein the sending of the delta file is performed by downloading the delta file to the portable device.

19. The server of claim 15 , wherein the portable device comprises a wireless portable device.

20. The server of claim 15 , wherein the information comprises a version number.

21. The server of claim 15 , wherein the information comprises a last update time.

22. The server of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further operative to:

determine that the catalog of content on the portable device needs to be completely replaced;

sending a replacement catalog of content to the portable device.

23. The server of claim 15 , wherein the delta file further comprises information specifying how at least a portion of new data in the delta file is to be displayed on the portable device.

24. The server of claim 15 , wherein the delta file further comprises information specifying that a visual element indicating new data is to be displayed along with at least some of the new data in the delta file.

25. The server of claim 15 , wherein the delta file contains some but not all of the information needed to bring the catalog of content stored in the portable device up-to-date with respect to the catalog of content stored in the server.

26. The server of claim 25 , wherein the server decides which information to include in the delta file based on user behavior or preference information from the portable device.

27. The server of claim 26 , wherein the user preference information is indicated by a user selection of a button indicating a user's preference.

28. The server of claim 25 , wherein the information not included in the delta file is searchable on the server by the portable device when a connection is established between the server and the portable device.

29. A portable device comprising:

an interface operative to communicate with a server that is in communication with at least one content provider, wherein the server stores a catalog of content available for download from the at least one content provider;

a memory storing a catalog of content available for download from the at least one content provider, wherein the catalog of content stored in the memory of the portable device is out-of-date with respect to the catalog of content stored in the server; and

a processor operative to:

send information to the server indicating which update version of the catalog is stored in the portable device;

receive one of a plurality of delta files from the server, wherein each delta file stored in the server comprises an incremental file update to bring a previous update version of the catalog up-to-date, and wherein the delta file received from the server is appropriate for the update version of the catalog stored in the portable device;

update the catalog of content stored in the memory of the portable device based on the delta file received from the server;

receive a user selection from the catalog of content even while the portable device is disconnected from the server;

store the user selection in the portable device; and

send the user selection to the server after a connection has been established with the server.

30. The portable device of claim 29 , wherein the delta file is streamed to the portable device.

31. The portable device of claim 29 , wherein the delta file is downloaded to the portable device.
