Abstract

A processor includes a first translation look-aside buffer to support a guest operating mode. A second translation look-aside buffer supports a root operating mode. Hardware resources support the guest operating mode as controlled by guest mode control registers defining guest context. The guest context is used by the hardware resources to access the first translation look-aside buffer to translate a guest virtual address to a guest physical address. The hardware resources access the second translation look-aside buffer to translate the guest physical address to a physical address.

Claims (15)

1. A processor, comprising:

a first translation look-aside buffer to support a guest operating mode;

a second translation look-aside buffer to support a root operating mode; and

hardware resources supporting the guest operating mode controlled by guest mode control registers defining guest context, wherein the guest context is used by the hardware resources to access the first translation look-aside buffer to translate a guest virtual address to a guest physical address, and the hardware resources access the second translation look-aside buffer to translate the guest physical address to a physical address.

2. The processor of claim 1 wherein the first translation look-aside buffer and the second translation look-aside buffer each include a kernel mode parameter bit.

3. The processor of claim 2 wherein the kernel mode parameter bit allows kernel-only pages to be mixed with user accessible pages in mapped memory.

4. The processor of claim 1 wherein the first translation look-aside buffer has an associated micro-translation look-aside buffer.

5. The processor of claim 4 wherein an address hit in the micro-translation look-aside buffer returns a physical page number.

6. The processor of claim 4 wherein an address miss in the micro-translation look-aside buffer results in a check of the first translation look-aside buffer.

7. The processor of claim 4 wherein an address hit in the first translation look-aside buffer secures a physical page number that operates as a virtual address to be looked up in the second translation look-aside buffer.

8. The processor of claim 7 wherein a virtual address hit in the second translation look-aside buffer yields a physical address returned to the micro-translation look-aside buffer.

9. The processor of claim 4 wherein a virtual address miss in the first translation look-aside buffer initiates a first translation look-aside buffer refill process using guest privileged context.

10. The processor of claim 7 wherein a virtual address miss in the second translation look-aside buffer initiates a second translation look-aside buffer refill process using root privileged context.

11. The processor of claim 1 executing a hypervisor that does not have knowledge of guest page tables.

12. The processor of claim 1 executing a hypervisor that does not have knowledge of address translation setup.
