Abstract

The present invention relates to an orally ingestible food or pet food composition or cosmetic composition containing glucosamine generated from plant materials through a drying process for the maintenance of joint health or prevention, alleviation and/or treatment of osteoarthritis, or the improvement of the skin quality and prevention or restoration of age-related alterations of skin. It also relates to the use of the composition in the manufacture of a nutritional product, a supplement, a treat, a medicament or a cosmetic product and methods for the maintenance of bone health, prevention, alleviation and/or treatment of osteoarthritis, improvement of the skin quality and prevention or restoration of age-related alterations of skin which comprises administering an effective amount of the composition.

Claims (20)

1. A method for treating osteoarthritis in a mammal in need thereof comprising:

orally administering to the mammal in need thereof a composition comprising an effective amount of dried plant material obtained by: drying plant material, wherein the plant material has a maximum width of 5 cm and is in the form of slices, cubes, or a combination thereof, and wherein said plant material is dried at a temperature between 80° C. and 105° C. over a period of 5 hours to 50 hours, wherein the dried plant material has a glucosamine content in an amount greater than 150 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material, and wherein the plant material is selected from the group consisting of chicory, carrot, Jerusalem artichoke and beet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of glucosamine in the dried plant material is greater than 700 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of glucosamine in the dried plant material is greater than 1000 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one additional ingredient selected from the group consisting of a protein source, a fat source, and a carbohydrate source.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drying temperature is between 80° C. and 92° C.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plant material is selected from the group consisting of Chicory ( Cichorium intybus ), carrot ( Daucus carona ), Jerusalem artichoke ( Helianthus tuberosum ), and beet ( Beta vulgaris ).

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the glucosamine in the dried plant material is in the form of free glucosamine.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is in a form selected from the group consisting of an infant formula, a pet food, a powder, a tablet, a capsule, a liquid concentrate, a solid product, a ready-to-drink beverage, a powdered nutritional formula and combinations thereof.

9. A method for improving joint function in a mammal in need thereof comprising:

orally administering to the mammal in need thereof a composition comprising an effective amount of dried plant material obtained by: drying plant material, wherein the plant material has a maximum width of 5 cm and is in the form of slices, cubes, or a combination thereof, and wherein said plant material is dried at a temperature between 80° C. and 105° C. over a period of 5 hours to 50 hours, wherein the dried plant material has a glucosamine content in an amount greater than 150 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material, and wherein the plant material is selected from the group consisting of chicory, carrot, Jerusalem artichoke and beet.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the amount of glucosamine in the dried plant material is greater than 700 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the amount of glucosamine in the dried plant material is greater than 1000 mg/kg dry matter of the dried plant material.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one additional ingredient selected from the group consisting of a protein source, a fat source, and a carbohydrate source.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the temperature of the drying is between 80° C. and 92° C.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plant material is selected from the group consisting of Chicory ( Cichorium intybus ), carrot ( Daucus carona ), Jerusalem artichoke ( Helianthus tuberosum ), and beet ( Beta vulgaris ).

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the glucosamine in the dried plant material is in the form of free glucosamine.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of an infant formula, a pet food, a powder, a tablet, a capsule, a liquid concentrate, a solid product, a ready-to-drink beverage, a powdered nutritional formula and combinations thereof.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises 0.001 g to 0.5 g of the dried plant material.

18. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises 0.001 g to 0.5 g of the dried plant material.
