Abstract

The present invention relates generally to the field of neuronal health and neuronal protection. One embodiment of the present invention relates to a composition that can be used for the protection of the enteric nervous system from neurodegeneration. Disorders linked to an impaired enteric nervous system can be treated or prevented by the administration of lactoferrin containing compositions according to the present invention.

Claims (6)

1. A method for the treatment of intestinal neuropathies and disorders associated therewith comprising administering an ingestible composition comprising lactoferrin in a concentration of at least 0.1 g/100 kcal of the composition to an adult in need of same.

2. A method for the treatment of impairments of the enteric nervous system comprising administering an ingestible composition comprising lactoferrin in a concentration of at least 0.1 g/100 kcal of the composition to an adult in need of same.

3. A method for the repair of the enteric nervous system comprising administering an ingestible composition comprising lactoferrin in a concentration of at least 0.1 g/100 kcal of the composition to an adult in need of same.

4. A method for the treatment of disorders linked to an impaired enteric nervous system comprising administering an ingestible composition comprising lactoferrin in a concentration of at least 0.1 g/100 kcal of the composition to an adult in need of same.

Method in accordance with claim 4 , wherein the disorder is selected from the group consisting of a low digestive and absorptive capacity, malnutrition, gastrointestinal reflux, intestinal dismotility, a slow intestinal transit, constipation, chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction, fecal incontinence, a weak intestinal barrier function, enteral feeding intolerance, gut discomfort, and hard stools.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the adult has an intestinal neuropathy.
