Abstract

A device for treating fecal incontinence in a subject is provided. The device includes a plug configured for positioning mostly within an anal canal of the subject.

Claims (12)

1. A method of introducing a plug into an anal canal comprising:

(a) providing a plug including an anchoring element having a cupped or flat disc shape, said anchoring element being connected to a biasing element by an axially stretchable elongated body, wherein a removable rod is positioned within said axially stretchable elongated body without deforming said disc shape of said anchoring element; and

(b) using said removable rod to:

(i) insert said anchoring element into the anal canal thereby folding said disc shape axially backwards, wherein said folding of said cupped or flat disc shape is caused by direct contact between said anchoring element and a wall of said anal canal; and

(ii) axially stretch said elongated body away from said biasing element to thereby position said anchoring element above the rectal neck bottom; and

(iii) release said axial stretch of said elongated body to thereby enable said anchoring element to conform to said rectal neck bottom anatomy.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said removable rod is connected to a finger hold being spaced apart from said biasing element when said rod is positioned within said axially stretchable elongated body and further wherein step (b) (ii) stretches said elongated body on said rod such that said finger hold moves in the direction of said biasing element.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring element has a bottom surface which conforms to the rectal neck anatomy.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the anchoring element assumes a shape of an inverted umbrella opening upwardly when conforming to said rectal neck bottom anatomy.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring element does not apply substantial radial force to a rectal wall surrounding the rectal neck bottom anatomy.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein upon release of said stretch of the elongated body, the elongated body returns to its original shape due to inherent elasticity.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring element is unrestrained and folds backwards during insertion through the anal canal and, upon withdrawal of the removable rod, the anchoring element folds forward and seats in the lower rectum.
