Abstract

In a programmable logic device having high-speed serial interface channels, a clock distribution network for providing one or more high-speed clocks to dynamic phase alignment circuitry of those high-speed serial interfaces includes at least one bus that is segmentable (e.g. using tristatable buffers). This allows the bus to be divided into different portions that can be connected to different clock sources when the high-speed serial interfaces are running at different speeds. In one embodiment, the segmenting elements (e.g., the aforementioned buffers) are located between selected channels (e.g., every fourth channel), limiting the size of the different segments. In another embodiment, segmenting elements are located between each channel, allowing complete user freedom in selecting the sizes of the segments. Thus, instead of providing a bus for every clock source, multiple clocks can be made available to different channels by segmenting a single bus.

Claims (21)

1. Signal distribution circuitry on an integrated circuit comprising:

blocks of circuitry, each of which includes a source of a signal for distribution to the blocks; and

a plurality of conductors extending along the blocks, each of which conveys a respective one of the signals to the blocks; and

bidirectional buffer circuitry between respective endpoints of adjacent ones of the conductors.

2. The circuitry defined in claim 1 further comprising:

circuitry for controlling each of the bidirectional buffer circuitries to drive in only one of its two possible drive directions.

3. The circuitry defined in claim 2 wherein the circuitry for controlling is programmable.

4. The circuitry defined in claim 1 wherein each of the conductors includes one of the bidirectional buffer circuitries adjacent each of the blocks.

5. The circuitry defined in claim 1 wherein each of the signals is a reference clock signal.

6. Signal distribution circuitry on an FPGA comprising:

blocks of programmable logic circuitry, each of which includes a source of a respective signal and segments of distribution circuitry for distributing the respective signals to the blocks, each of the segments including bidirectional buffer circuitry for each of the respective signals.

7. The circuitry defined in claim 6 further comprising:

circuitry for selectively controlling each of the bidirectional buffer circuitries to drive in only one direction.

8. The circuitry defined in claim 7 wherein the circuitry for controlling is programmable.

9. The circuitry defined in claim 6 wherein the respective signals are respective clock signals.

10. A method of operating signal distribution circuitry on an integrated circuit, said method comprising:

connecting respective ones of blocks of circuitry, each of which includes a source of a signal for distribution to the blocks, to respective ones of conductors extending along the blocks, each of which conveys a respective one of the signals to the blocks; and

bidirectionally buffering between respective endpoints of adjacent ones of the conductors.

11. The method defined in claim 10 further comprising:

controlling the bidirectional buffering to drive in only one drive directions.

12. The method defined in claim 10 wherein each of the signals is a reference clock signal.
