Abstract

A system and method for distributing and providing access to media and for extending such access to a desktop environment is described. A media player in a webpage or in a desktop environment may reference a centralized location to access a playlist of media files. The playlist itself may reference remotely-located media files that may be streamed to the media player. The media player may be distributed in multiple environments, and updates to the playlist may be automatically distributed to all instances where the playlist is referenced due to the centralized reference in the media player. The embodiments of the media player may also be used in advertising as a mechanism for increasing user contact with an advertising entity and as a mechanism for distributing announcements and information by the advertiser.

Claims (57)

1. A method of advertising that includes downloading a desktop executable program file from a web environment to a desktop environment of a computer operating system running on a client computer of a user, the desktop executable program file comprising executable code to execute a media player within the desktop environment of the operating system, the method comprising:

(1) generating, by an advertiser computing device, a first instance of an updatable advertisement that includes a first instance of the media player that is programmed (-i-) to establish, over an online computer network, a media-streaming connection to a remote server hosting media files, (-ii-) to receive the media files over the network from the remote server via the connection, and (-iii-) to play the media files in a web browser running on the client computer of the user;

(2) providing, by the advertiser computing device over the online computer network, the first instance of the updatable advertisement to the client computer for display on the client computer, and subsequently receiving a user selection from the web browser of the client computer to generate an expanded view of the first instance of the media player as part of the first instance of the updatable advertisement within the web browser;

(3) updating, based on the user selection, the first instance of the updatable advertisement to display the expanded view of the first instance of the media player within the web browser of the client computer, the expanded view including a first graphical user interface (GUI) displaying a frame in the web browser, the frame of the first GUI comprising:

(A) a media display area located in an upper portion of the frame of the first GUI to stream promotional content extracted from the media files hosted by the remote server,

(B) media control buttons located below the media display area of the first GUI, each of the buttons being programmed to control rendering of the promotional content within the media display area,

(C) a first playlist referencing the media files hosted by the remote server to sequence streaming of the promotional content within the media display area, the first playlist being located below the media control buttons,

(D) a first clickable link indicative of a request to copy codes for embedding an instance of the media player into a web page of the user, and

(E) a second clickable link that activates a user request to copy the first instance of the updatable advertisement via the client computer downloading the desktop executable program file to the client computer;

(4) receiving, by the remote server through the network, the request to copy and download the desktop executable program file onto the client computer;

(5) in response to user selection of the second clickable link, automatically outputting to the client computer a prompt to download and save the desktop executable program file to a location on the client computer of the user;

(6) automatically transmitting, by the remote server over the network, the desktop executable program file to the client computer for installation at the location on the client computer, the desktop executable program file executing a second instance of the updatable advertisement that includes a second instance of the media player that is programmed to establish, over the online computer network, a second communication connection to the remote server, to receive the media files over the network from the remote server via the second communication connection, and to play the media files in the desktop environment independent of the first instance of the media player;

The method of claim 1 , wherein the second instance of the updatable media data advertisement is configured to permit copying and insertion of additional instances of the updatable advertisement without requiring a user to download a copy of the updatable advertisement over the computer network.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the copy of the first instance of the updatable advertisement delivered over the computer network comprises a standalone executable program file.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the copy of the first instance of the updatable advertisement comprises a widget file configured to run on a third-party runtime as a desktop widget.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the desktop widget is one of a Flash®-based widget and a JavaScript®-based widget.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the copy of the first instance of the updatable advertisement comprises media to be played by the media player as part of the updatable advertisement.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

(10) permitting additional copying and inserting of additional instances of the media player by providing a fifth clickable link on the second GUI that is indicative of a request to copy the second instance of the media player for insertion into an environment external to the location.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

(11) in response to user selection of the fifth clickable link, providing HTML code that can be copied and inserted into a webpage to install a new instance of the updatable advertisement in the web environment.
