Abstract

Impact modified compositions having good impact performance can be made from a thermoplastic (e.g., a polyolefin such as polypropylene or HDPE) and a multi-block ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer. The compositions are easily molded and often have particular utility in making, for example, automotive facia, parts and other household articles.

Claims (24)

1. An impact modified composition comprising:

A) a thermoplastic polymer composition; and

B) from 1 to 25 weight percent based on the total composition of an impact-modifying amount of a multi-block ethylene/C 4 -C 12 α-olefin copolymer consisting of (i) at leas 60 mole percent ethylene and (ii) a C 4 -C 12 α-olefin comonomer and having a linear block structure comprising hard segments and soft segments, the multi-block ethylene/C 4 -C 12 α-olefin copolymer is polymerized in the presence of two polymerization catalysts having different comonomer incorporation indices, and a chain shutting agent and has

a Mw/Mn from 1.7 to 3.5, at least one melting point, Tm, in degrees Celsius and a density, d, in grams/cubic centimeter, wherein the numerical values of Tm and d correspond to the relationship:

T m >−2002.9+4538.5( d )−2422.2( d ) 2

wherein the amount of the hard segments is at least 30 weight percent to 70 weight percent, based on the total weight of the multi-block ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer.

2. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the multi-block ethylene/C 4 -C 12 α-olefin copolymer has a comonomer content of a TREF fraction which elutes between 40° C. and 130° C. greater than or equal to the quantity (−0.2013)T+21.07 where T is the numerical value of the peak elution temperature of the TREF fraction being compared, measured in ° C.

3. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the C 4 -C 12 α-olefin is a diene.

4. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer composition comprises one or more polymers selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, styrenics, polyolefins, polycarbonates, thermoplastic polyester, polyamides, polyactals, and polysulfones.

5. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer composition comprises polypropylene.

6. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer composition comprises high density polyethylene.

7. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the multi-block ethylene/C 4 -C 12 α-olefin copolymer:

has an I 10 /I 2 from 6.0 to 9.1.

8. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the linear block structure is void of tip segments.

9. The impact modified composition of claim 1 wherein the multi-block ethylene/C 4 -C 12 α-olefin copolymer has a one melting point, Tm, in degrees Celsius from 113° C. to 125° C., and a density, d, in grams/cubic centimeter from 0.85 g/cc to 0.93 g/cc.

10. The impact modified composition of claim 1 , comprising:

A) an isotactic propylene homopolymer, and

B) a multi block ethylene/octene copolymer.

11. The impact modified composition of claim 10 wherein the multi-block ethylene/octene copolymer has a density from 0.884 g/cc to 0.888 g/cc.

12. The impact modified composition of claim 11 wherein the multi-block ethylene/octene copolymer comprises

from 38 wt % to 40 wt % hard segments; and

from 62 wt % to 60 wt % soft segments.

13. The impact modified composition of claim 12 wherein the soft segments comprise from 53.6 wt % to 58.4 wt % octene.

14. The impact modified composition of claim 12 wherein the force required to separate pellets of the multi-block ethylene/octene copolymer is 0 lb/ft 2 after 4 weeks at 37° C. and under of 6 lbs with the load removed and the composition is allowed to cool at ambient conditions for at least 12 hours.
