Abstract

A system and method for removing contaminants from a gas stream is provided. The method can include the steps of reacting the gas stream with ozone to form solid contaminant particles and separating the solid contaminant particles from the gas stream. The solid contaminant particles can he separated from the gas stream using an adsorption material.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

admixing ozone with a gas stream comprising gaseous hydrogen sulfide and gaseous mercury to form solid mercury sulfide; and

separating the solid mercury sulfide from the gas stream.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the gas stream comprises non-condensable gas.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising adsorbing the solid mercury sulfide onto an adsorption material.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the adsorption material is selected from a group consisting of a plastic packing material, plastic spheres and glass beads.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising removing at least a portion of the hydrogen sulfide from the gas stream using a hydrogen sulfide abatement system.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the at least a portion of the hydrogen sulfide is removed before the step of admixing the ozone with the hydrogen sulfide.

7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the at least a portion of the hydrogen sulfide is removed after the step of admixing the ozone with. the hydrogen sulfide.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the gas stream contains less than about 0.1% hydrogen sulfide.

9. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising generating the ozone on-site.

10. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising adding hydrogen sulfide to the gas stream.

11. A system comprising:

a non-condensable gas stream comprising mercury and hydrogen sulfide;

an ozone generator operable to produce an effective amount of ozone;

a reactor operable to react the gas stream and the ozone; and

adsorber in communication with the reactor and operable to allow solid mercury sulfide to form and adhere to a surface of an adsorption material.

12. The system according to claim 11 , farther comprising a hydrogen sulfide abatement system operable to remove at least a portion of the hydrogen sulfide from the cas stream,

13. A method comprising:

reacting a first contaminant naturally present in a gas stream and a second contaminant naturally present in the gas stream with an effective amount of ozone to form a solid comprising the second contaminant; and

separating the solid comprising the second. contaminant from the gas stream.

14. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising generating the effective amount of ozone.

15. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising adsorbing the solid comprising the second contaminant onto an adsorption material.

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the first contaminant is hydrogen sulfide, the second contaminant is elemental mercury, and the solid formed is mercury sulfide.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the effective amount of ozone is 1 ppmv to 100 ppmv,

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein a portion of the first contaminant is removed from the gas stream before reacting the first contaminant and the second contaminant with ozone.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein an amount of the first contaminant sufficient to react substantially all of the second contaminant with ozone to form the solid remains following removal, of the portion of the first contaminant.

20. A method comprising:

removing at least a portion of hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream comprising hydrogen sulfide and mercury;

admixing ozone with the gas stream to form solid mercury sulfide; and

separating the solid mercury sulfide from the gas stream.
