Abstract

A delay locked loop includes initialization circuitry that ensures that a DLL is initialized to an operating point that is not to close to either end of a delay vs. control voltage characteristic. The initialization circuitry forces the DLL to initially search for a lock point starting from an initial delay, the delay is varied in one direction, forcing the DLL to skip the first lock point. The initialization circuitry only allows the DLL to vary the delay of the voltage controlled delay loop in the one direction from the initial delay until the operating point is reached.

Claims (48)

1. A delay locked loop for providing a delay clock signal, the delay locked loop comprising:

circuitry for detecting a phase difference between a reference clock signal and the delay clock signal and producing a control signal;

an initialization control circuit for receiving the control signal and providing an inversion control signal;

an inverting circuit, the inverting circuit being connected to the inversion control signal for selectively providing a single one of the reference clock signal and a phase-shifted reference clock signal; and

a variable delay line having an output coupled to the inverting circuit.

2. The delay locked loop of claim 1 , wherein:

the phase-shifted reference clock signal is an inverted reference clock signal.

3. The delay locked loop of claim 1 , wherein:

the phase-shifted reference clock signal is a 180 degree phase shifted reference clock signal.

4. The delay locked loop of claim 1 , wherein:

the variable delay line is a voltage controlled delay line.

5. The delay locked loop of claim 1 , wherein:

the variable delay line is a differential delay line.

6. The delay locked loop of claim 5 , wherein:

the output of the variable delay line comprises a plurality of tapped outputs.

7. The delay locked loop of claim 6 , wherein:

the variable delay line comprises a group of serially connected buffers; and

the plurality of tapped outputs are the outputs of the serially connected buffers.

8. The delay locked loop of claim 5 , wherein:

the variable delay line is a voltage controlled delay line.

9. The delay locked loop of claim 5 , wherein:

the differential delay line comprises delay elements, each delay element having a pair of inputs for receiving complementary clock signals.

10. The delay locked loop of claim 9 , wherein:

each delay element has a pair of outputs for providing complementary delayed clock signals.

11. The delay locked loop of claim 9 , wherein:

the differential delay line comprises a plurality of delay elements, each delay element having a pair of outputs for providing complementary delayed clock signals to inputs of a further delay element.

12. The delay locked loop of claim 11 , wherein:

the differential delay line comprises delay elements, each delay element having a pair of outputs for providing complementary delayed clock signals to inputs of a multiplexer, the multiplexer providing a tap clock signal.

13. A delay locked loop for providing a delay clock signal, the delay locked loop comprising:

circuitry for detecting a phase difference between a reference clock signal and the delay clock signal and producing a control signal;

an initialization control circuit for receiving the control signal and providing an inversion control signal;

an inverting circuit, the inverting circuit being connected to the inversion control signal for selectively providing a single one of the reference clock signal and an inverted reference clock signal; and
