Abstract

A delay compensation circuit for a delay locked loop which includes a main delay line having a fine delay line comprising fine delay elements and a coarse delay line comprising coarse delay elements, the main delay line being controlled by a controller, the delay compensation circuit comprising: an adjustable fine delay for modeling a coarse delay element, a counter for controlling the adjustable fine delay to a value which is substantially the same as that of a coarse delay element, a circuit for applying a representation of the system clock to the delay compensation circuit, and a circuit for applying the fine delay count from the counter to the controller for adjusting the fine delay line of the main delay line to a value which is substantially the same as that of a coarse delay element of the main delay line.

Claims (22)

1. A Delay-lock Loop (DLL) comprising:

a phase detector configured to compare a phase of a system clock and a feedback clock and provide up and down control signals,

an adjustable coarse delay circuit and an adjustable fine delay circuit connected in series, the adjustable coarse delay circuit and the adjustable fine delay circuit configured to delay the system clock and for provide the feedback clock,

a fine delay counter configured to provide a fine delay count value to control a delay of the adjustable fine delay circuit, the fine delay counter being updatable based on the up and down control signals, overflow and underflow conditions of the fine delay counter, and a value,

a coarse delay counter configured to provide a coarse delay count value to control the delay of the adjustable coarse delay circuit, the coarse delay counter being updatable based on the up and down control signals and the overflow and underflow conditions of the fine delay counter,

a delay compensation circuit coupled to the fine delay counter, the delay compensation circuit operable to, independently of the up and down control signals, determine the value to be provided to the fine delay counter that indicates a number of fine delay elements of the adjustable fine delay circuit corresponding to a single coarse delay element of the adjustable coarse delay circuit.

2. The DLL as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the delay compensation circuit is configured to provide either a multi-bit value or a complement of the multi-bit value.

3. The DLL as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the compliment of the multi-bit value comprises a 1's complement of the multi-bit value.

4. The DLL as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the delay compensation circuit includes:

at least one coarse delay element having a delay substantially equal to a coarse delay element of the coarse delay circuit; and

a plurality of fine delay elements, each having a delay substantially equal to a delay of a fine delay element of the fine delay circuit,

wherein a number of the plurality of fine delay elements is equal to the multi-bit value when a delay of the number of the plurality of fine delay elements is substantially equal to the delay of one of the at least one coarse delay elements.

5. The DLL as claimed in claim 1 wherein the coarse delay circuit comprises a coarse delay line.

6. The DLL as claimed in claim 1 wherein the fine delay circuit comprises a fine delay line.

7. A method of providing feedback in a Delay-lock Loop (DLL) comprising the steps of:

comparing a phase of a system clock and a feedback clock in order to provide up and down control signals,

delaying the system clock by adjusting a coarse delay and a fine delay circuit, wherein:

the coarse delay circuit is adjusted based on a coarse delay count value provided by a coarse delay counter, the coarse delay count value being determined based on the up and down control signals and the overflow and the underflow conditions of the fine delay, and

the fine delay circuit is adjusted based on a fine delay count value provided by a fine delay counter, the fine delay count value being determined based on the up and down control signals, the overflow and underflow conditions of the fine delay, and a value, and

determining, independently of the up and down control signals, the value to be provided to the fine delay counter that indicates a number of fine delay elements of the fine delay circuit corresponding to a single coarse delay element of the coarse delay circuit.

8. The method of providing feedback in a Delay-lock Loop (DLL) as claimed in claim 7 , wherein said modeling step provides the value to be provided to the fine delay counter comprises either a multi-bit value or a complement of the multi-bit value.

9. The method of providing feedback in a Delay-lock Loop (DLL) as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the complement of the multi-bit value comprises a 1's complement of the multi-bit value.
