Abstract

An introducer sheath is described. The introducer sheath may include a tubular body. The tubular body may extend from a distal end toward a proximal end. The tubular body may include a lumen. The lumen may at least partially be defined by a wall. A channel may be disposed within the wall. The channel may be configured to receive a guidewire. The tubular body may include an expandable portion expandable to increase a cross-sectional area of the lumen.

Claims (22)

1. An introducer sheath comprising:

a tubular body extending from a distal end toward a proximal end, the body comprising:

a lumen defined at least partially by a wall;

a secondary channel defined at least partially by the wall configured to receive a guidewire;

a portion of the wall forming an expandable portion, the expandable portion configured to increase a cross-sectional area of the body, the expandable portion being located between the lumen and the secondary channel; and

an outer portion at least partially surrounding the wall, the outer portion comprising a first aperture exposing a first portion of the wall adjacent the lumen and a second aperture exposing a second portion of the wall adjacent the secondary channel, the first aperture and the second aperture being on opposite sides of the tubular body along a first transverse axis that is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the tubular body, an intermediate portion of the outer portion, between the first aperture and the second aperture in the direction, extends toward the expandable portion on both sides of the expandable portion along a second transverse axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body, a distance between ends of the intermediate portion adjacent the expandable portion increasing as the expandable portion increases the cross-sectional area of the body along the second transverse axis.

2. The introducer sheath of claim 1 , wherein the expandable portion comprises a first material including an elastomer and the outer portion comprises a second material.

The introducer sheath of claim 1 , wherein the tubular body further comprises an entry portion at the distal end, the entry portion facilitating entry of a medical device, and the tubular body being configured to expand to accommodate the medical device without splitting an outer surface of the tubular body.

4. An introducer sheath, comprising:

a hub portion extending from a distal end toward a proximal end, the hub portion having a hub lumen formed therein; and

a tubular body extending from a distal end toward a proximal end, the tubular body comprising:

a lumen defined at least partially by a wall;

a secondary channel defined at least partially by the wall and configured to receive a guidewire;

a portion of the wall forming an expandable portion configured to increase a cross-sectional area of the tubular body, the expandable portion located between the lumen and the secondary channel; and

an outer portion at least partially surrounding the wall between the lumen and the secondary channel, the outer portion comprising first and second apertures on opposite sides of the tubular body in along a first transverse axis that is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the tubular body and an intermediate portion, between the first and second apertures in the direction, receiving a portion of the wall at a location where the outer portion extends toward the expandable portion on both sides of the expandable portion along a second transverse axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, the first and second apertures and the intermediate portion increase in at least one dimension in an expanded state of the tubular body, a distance between ends of the intermediate portion adjacent the expandable portion increasing as the expandable portion increases the cross-sectional area of the body along the second transverse axis.

5. The introducer sheath of claim 4 , wherein the tubular body further comprises an entry portion at the distal end, the entry portion facilitating entry of a medical device without splitting an outer surface of the tubular body.

6. A method for introducing a medical device into a body, the method comprising:

positioning a sheath upon a guidewire disposed within a body lumen, the sheath comprising a tubular body extending from a distal end toward a proximal end, the tubular body comprising a lumen defined at least partially by a wall, a secondary channel being defined at least partially by the wall and configured to receive the guidewire, and an expandable portion formed by a portion of the wall, the expandable portion configured to increase a cross-sectional area of the tubular body, the expandable portion located between the lumen and the secondary channel, and an outer portion at least partially surrounding the wall, the outer portion comprising a first aperture exposing a first portion of the wall adjacent the lumen and a second aperture exposing a second portion of the wall adjacent the secondary channel, the first aperture and the second aperture being on opposite sides of the tubular body along a first transverse axis that is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the tubular body, an intermediate portion of the outer portion, between the first aperture and the second aperture in the direction, extends toward the expandable portion on both sides of the expandable portion along a second transverse axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body, a distance between ends of the intermediate portion adjacent the expandable portion increasing as the expandable portion increases the cross-sectional area of the body along the second transverse axis;

introducing the sheath into the body lumen;

selectively inserting one or more medical devices into the body lumen through the sheath; and

upon selectively inserting one or more medical devices into the body lumen through the sheath, expanding a cross-section of one or more of the lumen or the second channel and pivoting portions of the outer portion about the intermediate portion when the lumen and the secondary channel transition from an unexpanded state to an expanded state.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the expandable portions is located near an inner wall of the lumen and/or on an inner wall of the secondary channel.
