Abstract

A mechanical finger comprises a plurality of phalanges coupled to a single actuator using a kinematic linkage and a differential linkage arranged in parallel. The mechanical finger is capable of exhibiting consistent predictable motion when moving in free space or when contacting an object at the fingertip, and of curling in order to conform to an object when the contact is at other locations on the finger.

Claims (21)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a proximal phalanx and a medial phalanx, the proximal phalanx coupled between a metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint and a proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint; the MCP joint being adapted for coupling to an associated base element to permit articulation of the proximal phalanx with respect to the associated base element, said medial phalanx pivotally connected to said proximal phalanx by said PIP joint to permit articulation of said medial phalanx relative to said proximal phalanx;

a differential linkage operatively connected between said MCP and PIP joints and adapted for receiving torque from an associated drive output and for transmitting torque to both the MCP and PIP joints;

a spring for placing a torque on the PIP joint in a direction that forces the medial phalanx to extend with respect to the proximal phalanx;

a movable stop for limiting rotation of the PIP joint, wherein said movable stop is connected to a stop linkage that moves said movable stop based upon articulation of said proximal phalanx relative to the associated base element about said MCP joint, wherein a location of an endpoint of the spring is set by the stop linkage.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the PIP joint comprises an axis of rotation, and wherein the stop is mounted for rotation about said axis of rotation of the PIP joint.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the differential linkage comprises one of:

(i) at least one compliant element for transmitting torque to both the MCP joint and to the PIP joint, wherein said compliant element is connected to said proximal phalanx;

(ii) a pivot link pivotally connected to said proximal phalanx, and first and second connecting rods pivotally connected to said pivot link, wherein said first connecting rod is adapted for connection to an associated drive output and wherein said second connecting rod is connected to said medial phalanx;

(iii) a connecting rod comprising a first end adapted for connection to an associated drive output and a second end connected to said medial phalanx.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint and a distal phalanx coupled to the DIP joint, the medial phalanx being coupled between the PIP joint and the DIP joint.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a kinematic linkage for coupling rotation of the PIP and DIP joints.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a differential linkage for coupling the PIP and DIP joints.

7. A mechanical finger comprising:

a proximal phalanx, a medial phalanx and a distal phalanx, the proximal phalanx coupled between a metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint and a proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, the medial phalanx coupled between the PIP joint and a distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint, and the distal phalanx coupled to the DIP joint; the MCP joint being adapted for coupling to an associated base element to permit articulation of the proximal phalanx with respect to the associated base element;

a differential linkage adapted for receiving torque and for transmitting torque to the MCP and PIP joints;

a kinematic linkage for coupling rotation of the PIP and DIP joints;

a spring for placing a torque on the PIP joint in a direction that forces the medial phalanx to extend with respect to the proximal phalanx;

a movable stop for limiting rotation of the PIP joint, wherein a position of said movable stop varies based upon flexion of said MCP joint, and wherein the spring comprises an end point that changes location based upon said position of said movable stop.

8. The mechanical finger of claim 7 , wherein the movable stop is mounted for rotation about an axis common with the axis of the PIP joint.

9. The mechanical finger of claim 7 , wherein the differential linkage comprises a linkage coupling a drive output to the MCP joint and the PIP joint, the linkage comprising at least one compliant element for transmitting torque to the MCP joint and the PIP joint.
