Abstract

A tracking system for items to be ionizing radiation sterilized is provided which utilizes an attached RF ID tag that is ionizing radiation proof or enclosed in an ionizing radiation proof holder. The RF ID tag is coded with a unique identification and certification data on the ionizing radiation sterilization. An RF ID tag reader is provided, which is usable by a user to obtain the identification and sterilization data from the RF ID tag on the item. The RF ID tag reader includes a user input for at least one trackable event and can write data based on the at least one trackable event back onto the RF ID tag. The RF ID tag reader is at least one of connectable to a PC or the internet, or is compatible for uploading the identification and any user input to an internet accessible device. A database is provided, having item related information. The database provides access to a user to obtain related information based on the identification from the RF ID tag and receives and stores data related to the at least one trackable event.

Claims (12)

1. A tracking system for gamma radiation irradiated lots of items, comprising:

an RFID tracking tag comprising a rewritable FRAM (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory) memory that is not adversely affected by gamma radiation sterilization;

said rewriteable FRAM memory comprising a unique identification written thereto prior to said gamma radiation sterilization;

and a memory reader which is usable by a user to obtain the device specific information from said memory device after it has been gamma irradiated.

2. The tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the item comprises at least one of liners for vessels, bags, filters, medical devices, or pharmaceutical, chemical or biological processing devices.

3. A method of tracking ionizing radiation irradiated items using a tracking system, comprising:

affixing a remotely readable and rewritable tag comprising a FRAM memory component that is not affected by ionizing radiation to the item that is encoded with an identification and other data related to the item;

subjecting the item and the FRAM memory component to gamma radiation; and

a user reading the FRAM memory component with a memory reader.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

a user writing data to the memory component before or after the gamma irradiation.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the item comprises at least one of liners for vessels, bags, filters, medical devices, or pharmaceutical, chemical or biological processing devices.
