Abstract

Coding techniques for a video image compression system involve improving an image quality of a sequence of two or more bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames, where each of the frames includes multiple pixels. One method involves determining a brightness value of at least one pixel of each bi-directionally predicted intermediate frame in the sequence as an equal average of brightness values of pixels in non-bidirectionally predicted frames bracketing the sequence of bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames. The brightness values of the pixels in at least one of the non-bidirectionally predicted frames is converted from a non-linear representation.

Claims (28)

1. A computer-implemented method for decoding a bitstream, the method comprising:

receiving, at a decoder, a bitstream that includes a first predicted frame, a second predicted frame, and a third predicted frame, the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first and third predicted frames in a delivery order and the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first predicted frame and prior to the third predicted frame in a display order;

decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the second predicted frame referencing the third predicted frame;

receiving, at the decoder, a first signal within the bitstream identifying the third predicted frame as expired; and

in response to the first signal, discarding, at the decoder, the third predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, at the decoder, a second signal within the bitstream indicating an expiration of the first predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal indicates a number of frames in the bitstream order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal indicates a frame in display order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the third predicted frame referencing the first predicted frame.

6. A system comprising:

one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at a decoder, a bitstream that includes a first predicted frame, a second predicted frame, and a third predicted frame, the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first and third predicted frames in a delivery order and the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first predicted frame and prior to the third predicted frame in a display order;

decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the second predicted frame referencing the third predicted frame;

receiving, at the decoder, a first signal within the bitstream identifying the third predicted frame as expired; and

in response to the first signal, discarding, at the decoder, the third predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving, at the decoder, a second signal within the bitstream indicating an expiration of the first predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first signal indicates a number of frames in the bitstream order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first signal indicates a frame in display order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the third predicted frame referencing the first predicted frame.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at a decoder, a bitstream that includes a first predicted frame, a second predicted frame, and a third predicted frame, the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first and third predicted frames in a delivery order and the second predicted frame being subsequent to the first predicted frame and prior to the third predicted frame in a display order;

decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the second predicted frame referencing the third predicted frame;

receiving, at the decoder, a first signal within the bitstream identifying the third predicted frame as expired; and

in response to the first signal, discarding, at the decoder, the third predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving, at the decoder, a second signal within the bitstream indicating an expiration of the first predicted frame as a referenceable frame.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first signal indicates a number of frames in the bitstream order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first signal indicates a frame in display order for expiration of the third predicted frame.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise decoding, at the decoder, a picture region of the third predicted frame referencing the first predicted frame.
