Abstract

Some embodiments of the invention provide a configurable integrated circuit (“IC”). The configurable IC includes a set of configurable logic circuits for configurably performing a set of functions. The configurable IC also includes a set of configurable routing circuits for routing signals to and from the configurable circuits. During several operational cycles of the configurable IC, a set of data registers are defined by the configurable routing circuits. These data registers may be used wherever a flip-flop can be used.

1. A configurable integrated circuit (“IC”) comprising:

a plurality of reconfigurable circuits, each of the plurality of reconfigurable circuits for reconfigurably performing a plurality of operations in a plurality of reconfiguration cycles,

wherein a first reconfigurable circuit is an interconnect/storage circuit that performs a storage operation during a first reconfiguration cycle and perform a non-storage operation during a second reconfiguration cycle,

wherein a second reconfigurable circuit is an interconnect/storage circuit that performs a non-storage operation during the first reconfiguration cycle and perform a storage operation during the second reconfiguration cycle, and

wherein the first and second reconfigurable circuits are communicatively coupled to operate as a data register during the first and second reconfiguration cycles.

2. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein a reconfiguration cycle is an operational cycle of the configurable IC during which the configuration of a particular reconfigurable circuit can be different than the configuration of the particular reconfigurable circuit during another reconfiguration cycle.

3. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein the second reconfigurable circuit performs a storage operation during at least two consecutive reconfiguration cycles.

4. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein the data register is initialized by an initialization signal that initializes the first and second reconfigurable circuits to a known value.

5. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein the data register operates at a data register cycle, wherein the data register cycle is longer than the reconfiguration cycle.

6. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein the first and second reconfigurable circuits are located at different physical interconnect/storage locations.

7. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein the first and second reconfiguration cycles are temporally consecutive reconfiguration cycles.

8. The configurable IC of claim 1 , wherein a third reconfigurable circuit is communicatively coupled with the first and second reconfigurable circuits to operate as the data register.

9. A method comprising:

at a first reconfiguration cycle, performing a storage operation at a first reconfigurable circuit and a non-storage operation at a second reconfigurable circuit; and

at a second reconfiguration cycle, performing a non-storage operation at the first reconfigurable circuit and a storage operation at the second reconfigurable circuit,

wherein the first and second reconfigurable circuits are reconfigurable circuits in an integrated circuit (IC) for reconfigurably performing a plurality of operations in a plurality of reconfiguration cycles, wherein the first and the second reconfigurable circuits are communicatively coupled to operate as a data register in the first and second reconfiguration cycles.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein a reconfiguration cycle is an operational cycle of the IC during which the configuration of a particular reconfigurable circuit can be different than the configuration of the particular reconfigurable circuit during another reconfiguration cycle.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the data register operates at a data register cycle, wherein the data register cycle is longer than the reconfiguration cycle.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second reconfiguration cycles are temporally consecutive reconfiguration cycles.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein a third reconfigurable circuit is communicatively coupled with the first and second reconfigurable circuits to operate as the data register.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second reconfigurable circuits are communicatively coupled by a lookup table (LUT) in the first and second reconfiguration cycles.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program for configuring an integrated circuit (“IC”), the IC comprising a plurality of reconfigurable circuits, each of the plurality of reconfigurable circuits for reconfigurably performing a plurality of operations in a plurality of reconfiguration cycles, the program comprising sets of instructions for:

configuring a first reconfigurable circuit to perform a storage operation during a first reconfiguration cycle and a non-storage operation during a second reconfiguration cycle; and

configuring a second reconfigurable circuit to performs a non-storage operation during the first reconfiguration cycle and perform a storage operation during the second reconfiguration cycle, wherein the first and the second reconfigurable circuits are communicatively coupled to operate as a data register in the first and second reconfiguration cycles.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the data register operates at a data register cycle, wherein the data register cycle is longer than the reconfiguration cycle.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first and second reconfiguration cycles are temporally consecutive reconfiguration cycles.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein a reconfiguration cycle is an operational cycle of the IC during which the configuration of a particular reconfigurable circuit can be different than the configuration of the particular reconfigurable circuit during another reconfiguration cycle.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the program further comprises a set of instructions for configuring a third reconfigurable circuit to communicatively couple the first and second reconfigurable circuit during the first and second reconfigurable cycles to operate as the data register.
