1. A freeze-dried Direct Systemic Induction (DSI) composition comprising:
the free acid of flunixin;
wherein the DSI composition has an oral dissolution time of less than about 75 seconds.
2. The freeze-dried DSI composition of claim 1 , wherein the oral dissolution time is less than about 5 seconds.
3. The freeze-dried DSI composition of claim 1 , wherein the free acid of flunixin is present in an amount ranging from about 0.5% to about 50% by weight of the overall composition.
4. The freeze-dried DSI composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises one or more excipients.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the freeze-dried DSI composition is administered to the oral cavity of the animal.
8. The freeze-dried DSI composition of claim 4 , wherein at least one excipient is gelatin.
