Abstract

The present invention relates to an apparatus ( 1 ) for providing metered amounts of ingredients to a nutritional composition for use in administration to an infant, in particular the present invention relates to an apparatus for providing individualized nutrition for infants based on the infants' special needs, the apparatus comprises a plurality of containers ( 2 ), a plurality of delivery devices ( 3 ), input means ( 14 ) and a controller ( 7 ) adapted to control the metered amounts of ingredients delivered individually from the containers in response to the input. Further, the present invention relates to a method of preparing a nutritional composition for an infant which is tailored to that specific infant.

Claims (23)

1. An apparatus for providing metered amounts of ingredients to a starting nutritional composition for use in administration to an infant, the apparatus comprising:

a plurality of containers, each containing one or more ingredients for a final nutritional composition;

one or more databases storing values of nutrient contents of the one or more ingredients present in the plurality of containers and storing recommended intake values of nutrients corresponding to health parameters of the infant;

a plurality of delivery devices, each connected to a corresponding container of the plurality of containers and adapted to deliver from the corresponding container a metered amount of the one or more ingredients, to form part of the final nutritional composition, to a receptacle;

an input member adapted to receive an input from a user, the input comprising health parameters of the infant, the input relating to amounts of the one or more ingredients to be delivered from the apparatus;

a controller adapted to 1) control the metered amounts of the one or more ingredients delivered individually from the plurality of containers by the plurality of delivery devices in response to the input from the user, 2) retrieve from the one or more databases the recommended intake values of nutrients corresponding to the input from the user and the values of nutrient contents in the one or more ingredients, 3) determine the metered amounts of the one or more ingredients to be delivered from the one or more of the plurality of containers corresponding to the input from the user, and 4) control the plurality of delivery devices to deliver into the receptacle the determined amounts of the one or more ingredients from the plurality of containers based on the input from the user and amounts of nutrients in the starting nutritional composition; and

an analyzer configured to analyze the amounts of nutrients in the starting nutritional composition and the final nutritional composition prepared from the starting nutritional composition by the apparatus.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the final nutritional composition is selected from the group consisting of an infant formula, a starter infant formula, a follow-on formula, an infant cereal composition, fortified milk, fortified infant formula and a nutritional supplement.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a liquefaction device to provide the starting nutritional composition as a liquid or liquefied sub stance.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more databases store regulatory data of recommended maximum and/or minimum intake values of nutrients for the infant.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more databases store incompability data of nutrients.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more databases store data of reactions of infants previously fed with the final nutritional composition produced by the apparatus.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more ingredients are selected from the group consisting of colostrums, pre-made supplementation compositions, infant formulas, human milk fortifiers, preterm infant formulas, water and compositions comprising one or more nutrients.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein at least one of the one or more nutrients is selected from the group consisting of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, nucleotides, probiotics, prebiotics, milk oligosaccharides, growth factors, milk fractions, and antioxidants.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to use a desired volume of the final nutritional composition inputted by a user to determine the amounts of the one or more ingredients according to the desired volume of the final nutritional composition.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the health parameters of the infant are selected from the group consisting of a weight, a length, a head circumference, a gestational age, a corrected age, a post gestational age, a time the infant is born before term, a history of food intake, a history of weight gain, failure to thrive, a blood or urine analysis and combinations thereof.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a sanitizer providing irradiation or a sanitizing fluid to maintain sterile conditions of the apparatus.

12. An apparatus for providing metered amounts of ingredients to a starting nutritional composition for use in administration to an infant, the apparatus comprising:

a plurality of containers, each containing one or more ingredients for a final nutritional composition;

a plurality of delivery devices, each connected to one of the plurality of containers and adapted to deliver from the corresponding container a metered amount of the one or more ingredients, to form part of the final nutritional composition, to a receptacle;

an input member adapted to receive the input from a user, the input comprising health parameters of the infant and the input relating to amounts of the one or more ingredients to be delivered from the apparatus;

a controller adapted to control the metered amounts of the one or more ingredients delivered individually from the plurality of containers by the plurality of delivery devices in response to the input from the user, the controller configured to determine the amounts of the one or more ingredients to be delivered based on the input from the user relating to the one or more ingredients to be delivered and amounts of nutrients in the starting nutritional composition; and

an analyzer configured to analyze the amounts of nutrients in the starting nutritional composition and the final nutritional composition prepared from the starting nutritional composition by the apparatus.
