Abstract

This disclosure generally relates to systems and methods to provide graphical user interfaces in computer-implemented multiplayer games. The graphical user interface includes a friends panel that is operable between a collapsed condition and an expanded condition. The friends panel provides friends information display functionality, social network management functionality, and/or messaging functionality both in the collapsed condition and in the expanded condition. In the collapsed condition, the friends panel may comprise a friends bar that shows a row of friend cards or chiclets associated with respective friends of a host player associated with a displayed game instance, the friends bar being clear of a view of a virtual in-game environment shown in the game display, while the expanded friends panel may comprise a grid of friend cards or chiclets that functionally obscures the in-game environment.

Claims (38)

1. A system comprising:

a game display module comprising at least one computer processor device configured to generate a game display for a computer-implemented multiplayer game, the game display including a game play area populated by one or more in-game objects receptive to player control during gameplay; and

a graphical user interface module comprising one or more computer processor devices configured to generate a messaging graphical user interface (GUI) element that forms part of the game display and that provides for messaging functionality comprising message composition functionality and message display functionality with respect to in-game communications respectively to and from other players of the game, the messaging GUI element being variable in onscreen area, to provide the messaging functionality in at least two different conditions in which the messaging GUI element obscures different respective portions of the game play area.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the messaging GUI element is selectively variable in onscreen area in response to player input by selective disposal of the messaging GUI element between:

a collapsed condition in which the messaging GUI element has a relatively smaller on-screen extent while providing the message composition functionality and the message display functionality; and

an expanded condition in which the messaging GUI element is relatively greater in on-screen extent while providing the message composition functionality in the message display functionality.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition is provided by a message bar occupying a peripheral area of the game display such that the game play area is substantially unobscured by the message bar.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the messaging GUI element in the expanded condition is provided by an expanded message panel that is greater in on-screen extent than the message bar and that projects into the gameplay area from the peripheral area occupied by messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition, such that the expanded message panel obscures at least some portions of the game play area that are exposed for view when the messaging GUI element is in the collapsed condition provided by the message bar.

5. The system of claim 4 , which is further configured to:

while the messaging GUI element is in the collapsed condition in which the message bar occupies the peripheral area; receive player input indicating that the messaging GUI element is to be disposed in the expanded condition;

responsive to the player input, transition the messaging GUI element from the message bar to the expanded message panel in animated fashion.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the graphical user interface module is configured such that the transitioning of the messaging GUI element from the message bar to the expanded message panel comprises animated movement of an inner edge of the message bar relative to the game play area further into the game play area.

7. The system of claim 2 , wherein

the graphical user interface module is configured to cause display of message content of at least one message in the message bar, and wherein

the graphical user interface module is configured such that the transitioning comprises displaying in the expanded message panel message content of a greater number of messages than the at least one message previously displayed in the message bar.

8. The system of claim 2 , wherein the message display functionality of the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition allows for display of no more than a predefined maximum number of messages.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the message display functionality of the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition allows for display of no more than a single message.

10. The system of claim 2 , wherein the graphical user interface module is configured such that message display when the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition excludes display of an identifying player image in association with any message displayed in the messaging GUI element, and such that message display when the messaging GUI element is in the expanded condition includes display of a plurality of identifying player images respectively associated with a corresponding plurality of messages displayed in the messaging GUI element.

11. A method comprising:

generating a game display for a computer-implemented multiplayer game, the game display including a game play area populated by one or more in-game objects receptive to player control during gameplay; and

in an automated operation performed using one or more computer devices configured to perform the automated operation, generating a messaging graphical user interface (GUI) element that forms part of the game display and that provides for messaging functionality comprising message composition functionality and message display functionality with respect to in-game communications respectively to and from other players of the game, the messaging GUI element being variable in onscreen area, to provide the messaging functionality in at least two different conditions in which the messaging GUI element obscures different respective portions of the game play area.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the messaging GUI element is selectively variable in onscreen area in response to player input by selective disposal of the messaging GUI element between:

a collapsed condition in which the messaging GUI element has a relatively smaller on-screen extent while providing the message composition functionality and the message display functionality; and

an expanded condition in which the messaging GUI element is relatively greater in on-screen extent while providing the message composition functionality and the message display functionality.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition is provided by a message bar occupying a peripheral area of the game display such that the game play area is substantially unobscured by the message bar.

14. The method of claim 13 , herein the messaging GUI element in the expanded condition is provided by an expanded message panel that is greater in on-screen extent than the message bar and that projects into the gameplay area from the peripheral area occupied by messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition, such that the expanded message panel obscures at least some portions of the game play area that are exposed for view when the messaging GUI element is in the collapsed condition provided by the message bar.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

while the messaging GUI element is in the collapsed condition in which the message bar occupies the peripheral area, receiving player input indicating that the messaging GUI element is to be disposed in the expanded condition;

responsive to the player input, transitioning the messaging GUI element from the message bar to the expanded message panel in animated fashion.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising

causing display of message content of at least one message in the message bar, and wherein

the transitioning comprises displaying in the expanded message panel message content of a greater number of messages than the at least one message previously displayed in the message bar.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the message display functionality of the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition allows for display of no more than a predefined maximum number of messages.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the message display functionality of the messaging GUI element in the collapsed condition allows for display of no more than a single message.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the message display functionality when the messaging GUI element is in the collapsed condition excludes display of an identifying player image in association with any message displayed in the messaging GUI element, and wherein the message display functionality when the messaging GUI element is in the expanded condition includes display of a plurality of identifying player images respectively associated with a corresponding plurality of messages displayed in the messaging GUI element.

20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions to cause a machine, when executing the instructions, to perform operations comprising:

generating a game display for a computer-implemented multiplayer game, the game display including a game play area populated by one or more in-game objects receptive to player control during gameplay; and

generating a messaging graphical user interface (GUI) element that forms part of the game display and that provides for messaging functionality comprising message composition functionality and message display functionality with respect to in-game communications respectively to and from other players of the game, the messaging GUI element being variable in onscreen area, to provide the messaging functionality in at least two different conditions in which the messaging GUI element obscures different respective portions of the game play area.
