Abstract

A flexible collet on a subterranean tool has sacrificial soft components to protect seal bores through which the collets have to compress to get through. The sacrificial components can be replaced when the tool is removed to the surface. In one embodiment, threaded fasteners are used alone or with washers for height adjustment such that the heads of the fasteners which are softer than the seal bore material ride on the seal bore and take the wear. The tool can ultimately be used to latch into shifting sleeves to move such sleeves to open or close wall ports. Alternatively axial ridges with beveled profile ends can be used or rolling members such as wheels or balls can be used to keep sharp edges off the seal bore. EDM method can be used to create multiple fingers with an axial ridge profile and rounded end transitions.

Claims (56)

1. A collet assembly for operating a subterranean tool after passage through a narrower bore, comprising:

a tubular mandrel having opposed ends and a plurality of slots to define a plurality of spaced fingers flexibly supported on opposed ends by said mandrel for opposed radial movement with respect to said mandrel, said fingers having a raised exterior segment having opposed axial edges and said raised exterior segment further comprises at least one outer surface and a profile for selective engagement of the subterranean tool;

said exterior segment on at least one of said fingers further comprising rolling or softer members than a seal bore, said rolling or softer members radially flexing with a supporting said at least one finger and extending beyond said outer surface to contact the narrower seal bore to prevent damage to the seal bore;

said exterior segment comprising an outer face having a first portion extending radially more than a second portion, said second portion flanking said first portion on opposed ends of said first portion, said profile located in said first portion;

said rolling or softer members affixed to said second portion in a spaced location from said spaced axial edges and in circumferentially spaced locations in a common plane on said at least one finger but extending radially beyond said first portion; or

said softer members are circumferentially spaced in a common plane or multiple planes on one side of said profile on said at least one finger and located adjacent said opposed axial edges.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling or softer members further comprise rolling members; and wherein

said rolling members comprise a plurality of wheels.

3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein:

said wheels comprise pairs on a common axle.

4. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein:

said wheel pairs are in multiple planes.

5. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein:

said axle is flexible.

6. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein:

said axle is surrounded by at least one bushing to absorb at least one of radial and thrust loads.

7. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein:

said axle or a hub surrounding said axle comprises a groove to retain a lubricant.

8. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling or softer members further comprise rolling members; and wherein

said rolling members comprise a plurality of spheres.

9. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling or softer members further comprise rolling members; and wherein

said rolling members are flexibly mounted.

10. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling members or said softer members than the seal bore keep said opposed axial edges from contacting the narrower bore.

11. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling or softer members further comprise rolling members; and wherein

said rolling members are retained on said finger with at least one fastener extending through a cover;

said cover and said raised exterior segment having engaging shoulders to protect said at least one fastener from shear stress.

12. The assembly of claim 11 , wherein:

said cover comprises said profile.

13. The assembly of claim 12 , wherein:

said cover is of different material, hardness, or strength as the said fingers.

14. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said rolling or softer members further comprise rolling members; and wherein

said exterior segment on a plurality of said fingers further comprising said rolling members which are softer than the seal bore, said rolling members extending beyond said outer surface to contact the narrower bore.

15. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein:

said rolling members comprise a plurality of wheels.

16. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein:

said wheels comprise pairs on a common axle.

17. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein:

said wheel pairs are in multiple planes.

18. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein:

said axle is flexible.

19. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein:

said axle is surrounded by at least one bushing to absorb at least one of bearing and thrust loads.

20. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein:

said axle or a hub surrounding said axle comprises a groove to retain a lubricant.

21. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein:

said rolling members comprise a plurality of spheres.

22. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein:

said rolling members are flexibly mounted.

23. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein:

said rolling members which are softer than the seal bore keep said opposed axial edges from contacting the narrower bore.
