Abstract

A method for creating a flexible fastener line is disclosed. The fastener line comprises fasteners oriented in directions which are transverse or oblique to a tissue incision created by a cutting member. The fasteners can translate and/or rotate within the tissue when the tissue is stretched thereby creating flexibility within the tissue.

Claims (35)

1. A method of creating a flexible staple line within the tissue of a patient, comprising:

applying a first row of staples to the tissue in a first rotational orientation with respect to a first longitudinal axis, wherein the first rotational orientation is non-collinear and non-perpendicular with respect to the first longitudinal axis;

applying a second row of staples to the tissue in a second rotational orientation with respect to a second longitudinal axis, wherein the second rotational orientation is non-collinear and non-perpendicular with respect to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the second rotational orientation is different than the first rotational orientation, wherein the staples of the second row of staples do not capture the same region of tissue as the staples of the first row of staples, wherein the first rotational orientation and the second rotational orientation change when the tissue is stretched longitudinally, and wherein the change in rotational orientation of the second rotational orientation is more than the change in rotational orientation of the first rotational orientation;

applying a third row of staples to the tissue in a third rotational orientation with respect to a third longitudinal axis, wherein the staples of the third row of staples do not capture the same region of tissue as the staples of the second row of staples;

applying a fourth row of staples to the tissue with respect to a fourth longitudinal axis;

applying a fifth row of staples to the tissue with respect to a fifth longitudinal axis, wherein the staples of the fifth row of staples do not capture the same region of tissue as the staples of the fourth row of staples; and

transecting the tissue between the first row of staples and the fourth row of staples.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first rotational orientation is parallel to the third rotational orientation.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of applying a first row of staples comprises bounding the second row of staples on a first side, and wherein said step of applying a third row of staples comprises bounding the second row of staples on a second side.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third rotational orientation changes when the tissue is stretched longitudinally.

5. A method of creating a flexible staple line within the tissue of a patient comprising:

applying a row of first staples to the tissue along a first longitudinal axis, wherein each first staple comprises a first proximal end and a first distal end offset with respect to the first longitudinal axis, and wherein a load applied to the tissue can cause the first staples to rotate a first amount relative to the first longitudinal axis;

applying a row of second staples to the tissue along a second longitudinal axis, wherein each second staple comprises a second proximal end and a second distal end offset with respect to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the second staples do not contact the first staples, wherein a load applied to the tissue can cause the second staples to rotate a second amount relative to the second longitudinal axis, and wherein the second amount is different than the first amount;

applying a row of third staples to the tissue along a third longitudinal axis, wherein the third staples do not contact the second staples;

applying a row of fourth staples to the tissue along a fourth longitudinal axis;

applying a row of fifth staples to the tissue along a fifth longitudinal axis, wherein the fifth staples do not contact the fourth staples; and

transecting the tissue between the row of first staples and the row of fourth staples.

The method of claim 5 , wherein said step of applying the row of first staples comprises applying the first staples according to a first orientation, wherein said step of applying the row of second staples comprises applying the second staples according to a second orientation, and wherein the second orientation is different than the first orientation.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said step of applying the row of third staples to the tissue comprises applying the third staples according to a third orientation, and wherein the third orientation is parallel to the first orientation.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein said step of applying the row of first staples comprises bounding the row of second staples on a first side, and wherein said step of applying a row of third staples comprises bounding the row of second staples on a second side.

9. A method of creating a flexible staple line within the tissue of a patient comprising:

applying a bounded row of staples to the tissue such that the staples straddle a longitudinal axis;

applying a first boundary row of staples to the tissue on a first side of said bounded row of staples, wherein the staples of the first boundary row of staples do not capture the staples in the bounded row of staples;

applying a second boundary row of staples to the tissue on a second side of said bounded row of staples, wherein the staples of the second boundary row of staples do not capture the staples in the bounded row of staples;

applying a third row of staples to the tissue;

applying a fourth row of staples to the tissue, wherein the staples of the fourth row of staples do not contact the staples of the third row of third staples; and

transecting the tissue between the first boundary row of staples and the third row of staples;

wherein said step of applying the first boundary row of staples comprises applying the staples in the first boundary row in a first orientation, wherein said step of applying the second boundary row of staples comprises applying the staples in the second boundary row in a second orientation, wherein the first orientation and the second orientation change when the tissue is stretched longitudinally, and wherein the change in orientation of the second orientation is different than the change in orientation of the first orientation.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said step of applying the bounded row of staples to the tissue comprises applying the staples in the bounded row of staples in a third orientation, and wherein the third orientation is transverse to the first orientation and the second orientation.

11. A method of creating a flexible staple line within the tissue of a patient comprising:

applying a row of first staples to the tissue along a first longitudinal axis, wherein each first staple is applied in a first rotational orientation with respect to the first longitudinal axis, wherein the first rotational orientation is non-collinear and non-perpendicular with respect to the first longitudinal axis, wherein the distance between the first staples form first gaps, and wherein a load applied to the tissue can cause the first staples to rotate a first amount relative to the first longitudinal axis;

applying a row of second staples to the tissue along a second longitudinal axis, wherein each second staple is applied in a second rotational orientation with respect to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the second rotational orientation is non-collinear and non-perpendicular with respect to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the second rotational orientation is different than the first rotational orientation, wherein the second staples are positioned adjacent to the first gaps to at least partially laterally overlap the first gaps, wherein the second staples do not physically overlap the first staples, wherein a load applied to the tissue can cause the second staples to rotate a second amount relative to the second longitudinal axis, and wherein the second amount is more than the first amount;

applying a row of third staples to the tissue along a third longitudinal axis;

applying a row of fourth staples to the tissue along a fourth longitudinal axis, wherein the staples of the row of fourth staples do not physically overlap the staples of the row of third staples; and

transecting the tissue between the row of first staples and the row of third staples.
