Abstract

Claims (34)

1 . A surgical system comprising:

a drive system configured to operate in a plurality of stages of operation including a firing stage in which the surgical system fires staples into tissue captured by the surgical system;

a sensor configured to sense vibrations generated by the drive system during the firing stage of the drive system; and

a control system operably coupled to the sensor, wherein the control system is configured to:

receive a signal indicative of the vibrations sensed by the sensor during the firing stage;

process the received signal to generate a processed signal; and

determine, based on a comparison of a voltage amplitude of the processed signal and a predetermined threshold value, whether a drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage, wherein the drivetrain failure is indicative of whether the firing of the staples was performed properly during the firing stage.

2 . The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to compare the processed signal to at least one predetermined threshold value.

3 . The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein to process the received signal comprises to filter the received signal to generate a filtered signal.

4 . The surgical system of claim 3 , wherein to filter the received signal comprises to filter the received signal using a plurality of filters to generate a plurality of filtered signals.

5 . The surgical system of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of filters include at least one bandpass filter.

6 . The surgical system of claim 4 , wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to compare a voltage amplitude of each filtered signal of the plurality of filtered signals to a different predetermined threshold value.

7 . The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein:

to process the received signal comprises to perform a fast Fourier transform (FFT) to generate a frequency response of the received signal, and

to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to compare the frequency response of the received signal to a signature waveform.

The surgical system of claim 7 , wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage based on a magnitude of a deviation of the frequency response of the received signal from the signature waveform.

9 . The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a position sensor configured to produce a position signal indicative of a position of the drive system,

wherein the control system is further configured to determine, during the firing stage, a displacement position of the drive system based on the position signal, and wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to compare the processed signal to a predetermined threshold value that is dependent on the displacement position of the drive system.

10 . The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein the control system is further configured to ignore the processed signal in response to a determination that the displacement position of the drive system is not within a reference displacement zone.

11 . The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein the control system is further configured to deactivate the sensor configured to sense vibrations in response to a determination that the displacement position of the drive system is not within a reference displacement zone.

12 . The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to activate the sensor at a start of the firing stage and deactivate the sensor at an end of the firing stage.

13 . A surgical stapler comprising:

an end effector including a pair of jaws;

a staple cartridge attached to the end effector and comprising a plurality of staples deployable into tissue captured by the pair of jaws of the end effector;

a drive system configured to operate in a plurality of stages of operation including a firing stage in which the surgical stapler fires staples from the staple cartridge into the tissue captured by the pair of jaws of the end effector;

a vibration sensor configured to produce a sensor signal indicative of vibrations generated by the drive system during the firing stage; and

a control system configured to:

receive the sensor signal from the vibration sensor during the firing stage;

perform a fast Fourier transform (FFT) on the sensor signal to generate a frequency response of the sensor signal;

compare the frequency response of the sensor signal to a signature waveform; and

determine, based on the comparison of the frequency response and the signature waveform, whether a drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage, wherein the drivetrain failure is indicative of whether the firing of the staples was performed properly during the firing stage.

The surgical stapler of claim 13 , wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage based on a magnitude of a deviation of the frequency response of the sensor signal from the signature waveform.

15 . The surgical stapler of claim 13 , wherein to determine whether the drivetrain failure has occurred during the firing stage comprises to compare the frequency response to at least one predetermined threshold value.

16 . The surgical stapler of claim 13 , wherein the control system is further configured to activate the vibration sensor at a start of the firing stage and deactivate the vibration sensor at an end of the firing stage.
