Abstract

An electronic device comprises a sensor comprising first and second electrodes, with the sensor being configured for a first acoustic displacement due to input acoustic pressure; circuitry configured to measure a charge between the first and second electrodes due to the input acoustic pressure and to apply a voltage to cause a second acoustic displacement of the sensor that is out of phase with the first acoustic displacement, with the applied voltage further causing a charge to develop across the sensor, and with the first and second acoustic displacements causing an increase in damping in a resonance frequency of the sensor, relative to damping of the resonance frequency of the sensor prior to applying the voltage; and a passive electronic component configured to cancel out the charge developed across the sensor due to the applied voltage.

a passive electronic component configured to cancel out the charge developed across the sensor due to the applied voltage.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) device, an accelerometer, a transducer, an acoustic sensor, a microphone or a gyroscope.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the passive electronic component is operatively connected to the circuitry.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry comprises:

a differential charge amplifier configured to sense the charge between the first and second electrodes due to the input acoustic pressure and to output an output voltage based on the sensed charge.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a piezoelectric beam, wherein the first acoustic displacement caused by the input acoustic pressure and the second acoustic displacement caused by the applied voltage is a total acoustic displacement;

wherein a charge is generated on the sensor due to the total acoustic displacement, in accordance with a relationship between displacement and a charge that is inherent in the piezoelectric beam.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the applied voltage is proportional to a derivative of the measured charge.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor and circuitry are configured sensing the charge between the electrodes and for actuating movement of the first sensor based on the applied voltage.

8. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor, circuitry and passive electronic component are packaged in the electronic device.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry comprises:

a differentiator with gain configured to receive the output voltage as an input to the differentiator with gain, further configured to apply a transfer function to the output voltage to produce a feedback voltage that is the applied voltage, wherein the transfer function is based on the gain of the differentiator, with the gain being adjustable to produce a specified amount of damping, and wherein the differentiator is configured to output a feedback voltage that is fed back into the sensor and into the passive electronic component to dampen the resonance frequency of the sensor.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a piezoelectric beam, wherein the first acoustic displacement caused by the input acoustic pressure and the second acoustic displacement caused by the applied voltage is a total acoustic displacement;

wherein a charge is generated on the sensor due to the total acoustic displacement, in accordance with a relationship between displacement and a charge that is inherent in the piezoelectric beam.
