Abstract

A wastewater treatment system includes a wastewater collection system, at least one aeration subsystem aerating the aerobic portion, and at least one filtration subsystem. The wastewater collection system has an anoxic portion, an aerobic portion downstream of the anoxic portion, an anaerobic portion downstream of the aerobic portion. The filtration subsystem includes at least one bioreacting filter receiving fluid from the aerobic portion, being operable to filter wastewater received from the aerobic portion, and discharging filtered fluid into the anoxic portion, an oxygen contactor fluidically connected between the aerobic portion and the at least one bioreacting filter and operable to diffuse oxygen into the fluid being supplied from the aerobic portion, and an oxygen supply operable to supply oxygen to the oxygen contactor.

Claims (43)

1. A wastewater treatment system, comprising:

a septic tank having an operating state and a servicing state and defining:

a primary stage having an input in which effluent is received;

a secondary stage having an output from which processed effluent is discharged and defining a preset operating limit for the processed effluent; and

at least one port fluidically connecting the primary stage to the secondary stage;

an access subassembly providing access at least into the secondary stage from the environment by a user;

a pumping subassembly disposed in the secondary stage and comprising a liquid pump:

having a pump inlet fluidically connected to the processed effluent in the secondary stage;

having a pump outlet; and

pumping the processed effluent from the pump inlet to the pump outlet continuously during the operating state;

a filtration system comprising:

a filter comprising:

a filter inlet fluidically connected to the pump outlet to receive the pumped processed effluent from the secondary stage;

a filter output from which filtered effluent exits; and

at least one removable filter element fluidically connected between the filter inlet and the filter output;

an output subassembly comprising:

a system outlet from which the filtered effluent is discharged to the environment;

a back-flow conduit fluidically connected to the secondary stage and discharging the filtered effluent to the secondary stage; and

a controllable valve fluidically connected to the filter output, to the system outlet, and to the back-flow conduit and selectively directing the filtered effluent to one of the system outlet and the back-flow conduit; and

a detector operatively connected to the controllable valve to regulate actuation of the controllable valve to either return filtered effluent to the secondary stage through the back-flow conduit or to discharge filtered effluent to the environment dependent upon a level of the processed effluent within the secondary stage and, responsive to the detector detecting that the level of the processed effluent within the secondary stage is greater than the preset operating limit, the controllable valve continuously discharges the filtered effluent to the environment until the level in the secondary stage is drained down to the preset operating limit, at which time, the controllable valve returns filtered effluent back into the secondary stage through the back-flow conduit.

2. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the septic tank is a continuous duty septic tank disposed underground.

3. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the septic tank is a continuous duty package plant disposed one of above ground and below ground.

4. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the pump inlet is continuously submerged in liquid within the secondary stage.

5. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid pump is at least one of:

a combination effluent and aeration pump;

an effluent pump and a separate air pump; and

an effluent pump and a snorkel passively suppling fresh air to the effluent pump.

6. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid pump is submersed in liquid within the secondary stage.

7. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the detector comprises a float switch having a float defining the level of the effluent within the secondary stage.

8. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the detector is a float switch having a float defining the level of the effluent within both the primary and secondary stages.

9. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the filter is a multistage filter comprising at least one of a fluidized-bed aerobic filter portion, a fluidized-bed anaerobic filter portion, a Phosphorous filter portion, and an additional filter element; and

the at least one removable filter element comprises at least one of the fluidized-bed aerobic filter portion, the fluidized-bed anaerobic filter portion, the Phosphorous filter portion, and the additional filter element.

10. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 9 , wherein the controllable valve is controlled to circulate effluent from the secondary stage through the multistage filter and through the back-flow conduit at a constant rate.

11. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 10 , wherein, responsive to the detector detecting that the level of the effluent within the secondary stage is greater than the preset operating limit, the controllable valve continuously discharges the filtered effluent to the environment until the level in the secondary stage is drained down by a given percentage, at which time, the controllable valve returns filtered effluent back into the secondary stage through the back-flow conduit.

12. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 10 , wherein, responsive to the detector detecting that the level of the effluent within the secondary stage is greater than the preset operating limit, the controllable valve continuously discharges the filtered effluent to the environment until the level in the secondary stage is drained down by approximately thirty percent, at which time, the controllable valve returns filtered effluent back into the secondary stage through the back-flow conduit.

13. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the filtration system is external to the septic tank.

14. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the filtration system is disposed within the secondary stage.

15. The wastewater treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the access subassembly and the filtration system are modular and the filtration system is a cartridge that fits within the access subassembly.
