Abstract

One embodiment relates to an exit device assembly. The exit device assembly includes a center case, a push pad movably mounted on the center case, and a mechanical case coupled to the center case, wherein the exit device includes an opening. The assembly also includes a sensor aligned with the opening, wherein the sensor is structured to detect a user from a distance through the opening and to generate an output signal in response to detecting the user. The assembly also includes a latch and a latch actuator. The assembly also includes a controller in communication with the sensor and the latch actuator, wherein the controller is structured to transmit an actuating signal in response to receiving the output signal from the sensor, wherein the latch actuator is configured to move the latch from the locked position to the unlocked position in response to the actuating signal.

Claims (33)

1. An exit device assembly, of a push bar type, comprising:

an exit device comprising a center case, a push pad movably mounted on the center case, and a mechanical case coupled to the center case, wherein the exit device comprises an opening formed in a front surface of one of the push pad, the mechanical case, and the center case;

a sensor aligned with the opening, wherein the sensor is structured to detect a user from a distance through the opening and to generate an output signal in response to detecting the user;

a latch having a latched state and an unlatched state;

a latch actuator drivingly connected to the latch; and

a controller in communication with the sensor and the latch actuator, wherein the controller is structured to transmit an actuating signal in response to receiving the output signal from the sensor;

wherein the latch actuator is configured to move the latch from the latched state to the unlatched state in response to the actuating signal.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is one of a proximity sensor, a motion sensor, an infrared sensor, and an optical sensor.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the distance is at least six inches.

4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the distance is less than eighteen inches.

5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the latch comprises a latch bolt configured to move between the latched and unlatched states in response to movement of the push pad.

6. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising powered door operator in communication with the controller, wherein the powered door operator is structured to drive a door from a closed position to an opened position in response to the actuating signal.

7. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless transmitter in communication with the controller, wherein the controller is structured to transmit the actuating signal wirelessly via the wireless transmitter.

8. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a battery electrically coupled to the sensor and structured to provide power to the sensor.

9. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the latch comprises an electric strike configured for mounting to a door frame and configured for interaction with a bolt connected to a door with the door adapted for movement relative to the door frame, the electric strike defining the latched and unlatched states, the electric strike transitioning to the unlatched state in response to the actuating signal to allow opening of the door relative to the door frame.

10. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the controller is located within the sensor.

11. A method of operating and the exit device assembly of claim 1 , the exit device assembly having a rear face coupled to a door and an opposite front face, the method comprising:

installing the sensor within an opening formed in the door;

sensing, with the sensor, the user from the distance;

in response to the sensing, transmitting the actuating signal to the latch actuator; and

in response to the actuating signal, operating the latch actuator, wherein operating the latch actuator includes transitioning the latch from the latched state to the unlatched state.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the front face of the exit device is defined by a housing assembly including one of the push pad, the mechanical case, and the center case, and wherein the method further comprises replacing the one of the push pad, the mechanical case, and the center case with a retrofit plate including the opening.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein operating the latch actuator includes transitioning the latch from the latched state to the unlatched state before the user reaches the exit device.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein operating the latch actuator includes transitioning the latch from the latched state to the unlatched state before the user exerts a force on either of the exit device or the door.

15. A retrofit kit assembly for an exit device, of a push bar type, comprising one of a push pad, a mechanical case, and a center case, the retrofit kit assembly comprising:

a retrofit plate with an opening structured to accommodate a sensor, wherein the retrofit plate is structured to replace the one of the push pad, the mechanical case, and the center case;

a sensor aligned with the opening in the retrofit plate, coupled to the retrofit plate, and configured to detect a user from a distance and generate an output signal in response to the detecting; and

a controller structured to receive the output signal from the sensor and to transmit an actuating signal to a latch actuator in response to the output signal.

16. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is configured to detect the user in response to the user performing a predetermined gesture.

17. The assembly of claim 15 , further comprising a latch having a locked position and an unlocked position and a latch actuator drivingly connected to the latch.

18. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to transmit the actuating signal to the latch actuator before the user reaches the exit device.

19. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the controller is in communication with the latch actuator by way of a wireless communication.

20. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein the user is sensed before the user exerts force on the door.
