Exit device systems and methods
An exit device according to one embodiment includes a plurality of sensors and an electronic dogging mechanism. The exit device is configured to locally analyze sensor data to determine the security state of the exit device, report data to a management system via a wireless communication channel established between the exit device and the management system, and receive and process instructions to perform an electronic dogging operation.
1. A dogging mechanism for an exit device comprising a link bar, the dogging mechanism comprising:
a hook operable to engage the link bar, wherein the hook is configured to be driven between an actuated hook position and a deactuated hook position by engagement with the link bar as the link bar moves between an actuated link bar position and a deactuated link bar position;
a trigger operable to engage the hook, the trigger having an actuated trigger position in which the trigger is operable to retain the hook in the actuated hook position to thereby retain the link bar in the actuated link bar position, the trigger having a deactuated trigger position in which the trigger permits movement of the hook between the actuated hook position and the deactuated hook position to thereby permit movement of the link bar between the deactuated link bar position and the actuated link bar position; and
an actuator operable to selectively move the trigger from the deactuated trigger position toward the actuated trigger position.
2. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a spring mechanism engaged with the trigger, wherein the spring mechanism is configured to selectively bias the trigger toward each of the actuated trigger position and the deactuated trigger position.
3. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the trigger further has a ready trigger position between the actuated trigger position and the deactuated trigger position;
wherein, with the hook in the deactuated hook position, the hook prevents movement of the trigger from the ready trigger position to the actuated trigger position; and
wherein, with the trigger in the ready trigger position, the trigger is biased toward the actuated trigger position such that the trigger moves to the actuated trigger position in response to movement of the hook from the deactuated hook position to the actuated hook position.
4. The dogging mechanism of claim 3 , further comprising a spring mechanism engaged with the trigger;
wherein the dogging mechanism has an undogged state in which the spring mechanism biases the trigger toward the deactuated trigger position, and the hook is free to move between the actuated hook position and the deactuated hook position;
wherein the dogging mechanism has a ready state in which the hook is in the deactuated hook position, the trigger is in the ready trigger position and is engaged with the hook, and the spring mechanism biases the trigger toward the actuated trigger position such that the trigger moves from the ready trigger position to the actuated trigger position in response to movement of the hook from the deactuated hook position to the actuated hook position; and
wherein the dogging mechanism has a dogged state in which the hook is in the actuated hook position, the trigger is in the actuated trigger position, and the trigger prevents the hook from moving to the deactuated hook position, thereby retaining the link bar in the actuated link bar position to retain the exit device in an actuated state.
5. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the hook is mounted for pivotal movement between the actuated hook position and the deactuated hook position.
6. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the trigger is mounted for pivotal movement between the actuated trigger position and the deactuated trigger position.
7. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a mounting plate, wherein each of the hook and the trigger is pivotably mounted to the mounting plate.
8. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the hook is pivotable about a first axis; and
wherein the trigger is pivotable about a second axis offset from the first axis.
9. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the hook is configured to be driven from the actuated hook position to the deactuated hook position by engagement with the link bar as the link bar moves from the actuated link bar position to the deactuated link bar position; and
wherein the hook is configured to be driven from the deactuated hook position to the actuated hook position by engagement with the link bar as the link bar moves from the deactuated link bar position to the actuated link bar position.
10. The dogging mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the hook is configured to receive the link bar for movement along a longitudinal axis of the link bar; and
wherein the hook is mounted for pivotal movement about a pivot axis that is offset from the longitudinal axis of the link bar.
11. An exit device, comprising:
a hook mounted for movement between an actuated hook position and a deactuated hook position;
a drive assembly comprising a link bar, the drive assembly having an actuated state in which the link bar is in an actuated link bar position, and the drive assembly having a deactuated state in which the link bar is in a deactuated link bar position, wherein the link bar is configured to drive the hook from the actuated hook position toward the deactuated hook position as the link bar moves from the actuated link bar position toward the deactuated link bar position;
a trigger operable to engage the hook, the trigger having an actuated trigger position in which the trigger is operable to retain the hook in the actuated hook position to thereby retain the link bar in the actuated link bar position, the trigger having a deactuated trigger position in which the trigger permits movement of the hook between the actuated hook position and the deactuated hook position to thereby permit movement of the link bar between the deactuated link bar position and the actuated link bar position; and
an actuator operable to selectively move the trigger from the deactuated trigger position toward the actuated trigger position.
12. The exit device of claim 11 , wherein the actuator comprises an electrically-operated driver.
13. The exit device of claim 12 , further comprising:
a wireless communication device; and
a controller configured to operate the electrically-operated driver based upon information received via the wireless communication device.
14. The exit device of claim 12 , further comprising a manual dogging actuator, wherein the manual dogging actuator and the electrically-operated driver are independently operable to move the trigger such that each of the manual dogging actuator and the electrically-operated driver is at all times capable of moving the trigger.
15. A dogging mechanism for an exit device, the dogging mechanism comprising:
a hook mounted for pivotal movement about a first pivot axis between a deactuated hook position corresponding to a deactuated state of the exit device and an actuated hook position corresponding to an actuated state of the exit device;
a trigger mounted for pivotal movement about a second pivot axis between a deactuated trigger position and an actuated trigger position, wherein the first pivot axis and the second pivot axis are offset from one another, wherein the trigger in the actuated trigger position is operable to retain the hook in the actuated hook position, and wherein the trigger in the deactuated trigger position is configured to permit movement of the hook between the actuated hook position and the deactuated hook position; and
an over-center spring mechanism engaged with the trigger and configured to selectively bias the trigger toward each of the actuated trigger position and the deactuated trigger position.
16. The dogging mechanism of claim 15 , further comprising an actuator operable to selectively move the trigger from the deactuated trigger position toward the actuated trigger position.
17. The dogging mechanism of claim 16 , wherein the actuator comprises a link and an electronic driver operable to reciprocate the link.
18. The dogging mechanism of claim 17 , wherein the link is engaged with the trigger via a lost motion connection.
19. The dogging mechanism of claim 15 , further comprising: a mechanical actuator, wherein the mechanical actuator is operable to mechanically move the trigger between the deactuated trigger position and the actuated trigger position; and
an electronic actuator, wherein the mechanical actuator is operable to electronically move the trigger between the deactuated trigger position and the actuated trigger position.
20. The dogging mechanism of claim 15 , wherein the trigger is operable to pivot through a deactuated trigger range including the deactuated trigger position and an actuated trigger range including the actuated trigger position;
wherein the over-center spring mechanism is configured to bias the trigger toward the deactuated trigger position when the trigger is in the deactuated trigger range; and
wherein the over-center spring mechanism is configured to bias the trigger toward the actuated trigger position when the trigger is in the actuated trigger range.
21. The dogging mechanism of claim 15 , further comprising: an electronic driver operable to move the trigger; and
a control assembly operable to control the electrically-operable actuator, the control assembly comprising a controller and a dogging status sensor operable to detect a position of the trigger; and
wherein the controller is configured to control the electronic driver based upon information generated by the dogging status sensor.
22. The dogging mechanism of claim 15 , further comprising an engagement mechanism defined by the trigger and the hook; and
wherein the engagement mechanism comprises a protrusion and a notch operable to received the protrusion to thereby cause the trigger to retain the hook in the actuated hook position.
