Abstract

Disclosed is an NGT system, the system comprises a nasogastric tube having a diameter and length configured to pass through an esophagus such that the lumen of the NGT maintains fluid communication with a portion of the digestive tract, and a digestive tract sensor operatively associated with the NGT, the digestive tract sensor configured to sense from inside the body and transmit signals in response to one or both of conditions relating to nourishment states of the digestive tract, and positioning of the NGT.

Claims (32)

1. A gastric feeding tube system, comprising:

a gastric feeding tube having a diameter and length configured to pass through an esophagus;

at least one antenna sensor adapted to emit signals and interpret return signals and positioned on said gastric feeding tube and located to be inside the body of a patient when the gastric feeding tube is in an operative position for feeding said patient, said at least one antenna sensor is positioned in or above the esophageal sphincter, in the esophagus,

a controller adapted for:

perform an analysis of said interpreted return signals from the at least one antenna sensor for determining a distance of said gastric feeding tube from the esophageal sphincter, and

instructing, according to an outcome of said analysis, a performance of at least one of:

generating an alert signal for presentation to an operator,

suspending feeding using gastric feeding tube, and

restarting feeding using gastric feeding tube.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said at least on antenna sensor is operative to provide an output signaling the position of said feeding tube in said digestive tract or a change in the position of said feeding tube in said digestive tract.

3. The system according to claim 2 , further comprising a display operative to provide an operator-interpretable indication according to the output signaling.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein patient when the gastric feeding tube is in said operative position said at least one antenna sensor is in the esophageal sphincter.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one antenna sensor comprises an electromagnet coil.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said controller is programmable to instruct feeding via the feeding tube according to a nourishment plan for a given patient.

7. The system according to claim 1 wherein said controller is adapted for:

receiving a nourishment plan for a given patient;

supplying nourishment according to said nourishment plan via the gastric tube inside the patient's digestive tract; and

suspending and restarting the supply of nourishment in response to signals from the at least one antenna sensor.

8. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a light emitting sensor for measuring light in the digestive tract; wherein said analysis comprise an analysis of signals from the at least one sensor are an outcome of said measured light.

9. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a pH sensor for measuring pH in the digestive tract; wherein said analysis comprises an analysis of signals from the at least one sensor are an outcome of said measured pH.

10. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a thermocouple for measuring differences in temperature in the digestive tract; wherein said analysis comprises an analysis of signals from the thermocouple which are an outcome of said differences in temperature.

11. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a pressure sensor for measuring pressure in the digestive tract; wherein said analysis comprises an analysis of signals from the pressure sensor which are an outcome of said pressure.

12. The system according to claim 1 , including a nourishment pump operatively associated with said controller and connected to a lumen of said feeding tube, wherein said controller is configured to control the movement of nourishment through said nourishment pump in response to signals received by said controller.

13. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a gastric fluid sensor configured to output indications distinguishing between saliva and gastric fluids.

14. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one antenna sensor is located about in a mid esophageal location when said gastric tube is used for feeding said patient.

15. The system according to claim 2 , wherein said controller provides, responsive to signals from said at least on antenna sensor, guidance to an operator in positioning said gastric feeding tube in the stomach.

16. A method of operating a gastric feeding tube system, comprising:

performing an analysis of signals from at least one antenna sensor for a distance of said gastric feeding tube from the esophageal sphincter, the at least one antenna sensor is positioned on a gastric feeding tube having a diameter and length configured to pass through an esophagus, the at least one antenna sensor is located to be inside the body of a patient when the gastric feeding tube is in an operative position for feeding said patient, said at least one antenna sensor is positioned in or above the esophageal sphincter, in the esophagus, and

instructing, according to an outcome of said analysis, a performance of at least one of:

generating an alert signal for presentation to an operator,

suspending feeding using gastric feeding tube, and

restarting feeding using gastric feeding tube.
