Abstract

Disclosed are sheaths that comprise a first sheath member having a first passageway, a first length, and a first proximal end defined by a first valve apparatus configured to seal the first passageway, the first passageway having a first passageway diameter at a location in the first passageway; and a second sheath member coupled to the first sheath member, the second sheath member having a second passageway and a second length, the second passageway having a second passageway diameter at a location in the second passageway; where the first passageway and the second passageway are separate from each other and not co-axial, the first length is different from the second length, and the first and second sheath members are positioned beside each other for a portion of their first and second lengths.

Claims (35)

1. A method of positioning an elongated member with two fluidly-distinct passageways into a subject, the method comprising:

introducing an elongated member into a bodily lumen of a subject, the elongated member comprising a first passageway extending along a single longitudinal axis from a first proximal end to a first distal end, the first distal end located at a distal end of the elongated member, the first proximal end configured to couple to a valve apparatus;

wherein the valve apparatus comprises a membrane that extends at least partially across the first passageway to allow other devices to be introduced through the first passageway while preventing fluid from flowing out of the first proximal end of the first passageway;

introducing a separate device into the first passageway through the valve apparatus, wherein the valve apparatus is configured to seal around the separate device;

wherein the elongated member comprises a second passageway, the second passageway comprising a generally circular cross-section;

wherein the first passageway and the second passageway are fluidly separate from each other and located along different longitudinal axes along an entire length of the elongated member; and

wherein the first and second passageways are adjacent each other for at least a portion of the elongated member; and

detecting at least one physiologic or biochemical property using a detector positioned at least partially within the elongate member, wherein the detector is located along a distal end of the second passageway.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member comprises a sheath.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member comprises a catheter.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the first passageway is different than a diameter of the second passageway.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the separate device comprises at least one of a catheter, a guidewire and an introducer.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bodily lumen of a subject comprises a blood vessel.

7. A method of positioning an elongated member with two fluidly-distinct passageways into a subject, the method comprising:

introducing an elongated member into a bodily lumen of a subject, the elongated member comprising a first passageway extending along a single longitudinal axis from a first proximal end to a first distal end, the first proximal end being configured to couple to a valve apparatus;

wherein the valve comprises a membrane that extends at least partially across the first passageway to allow at least one other device to be introduced through the first passageway while preventing fluid from flowing out of the first proximal end of the first passageway; and

wherein the elongated member comprises a second passageway, wherein the first passageway and the second passageway are fluidly separate from each other and are located along different longitudinal axes of the elongated member;

introducing a separate device into the first passageway along through the valve apparatus; and

detecting at least one physiologic or biochemical property using a detector positioned at least partially within the elongate member, wherein the detector is located along a distal end of the second passageway.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the elongated member comprises a sheath.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the elongated member comprises a catheter.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein a diameter of the first passageway is different than a diameter of the second passageway.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one other device comprises a catheter.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the bodily lumen of a subject comprises a blood vessel.

13. A method of positioning an elongated member with two fluidly-distinct passageways into a subject, the method comprising:

introducing an elongated member into a bodily lumen of a subject, the elongated member comprising a first passageway extending from a first proximal end to a first distal end, the first proximal end being configured to couple to a valve apparatus;

wherein the elongated member is configured to comprise or receive a detector positioned along a distal end of the elongated member; and

wherein the elongated member comprises a second passageway, wherein the first passageway and the second passageway are fluidly separate from each other and are located along different longitudinal axes of the elongated member, the second passageway comprising a generally circular cross-sectional area; and

the first passageway being configured to receive a separate device through the valve apparatus in order to selectively move the separate device within the first passageway; and

detecting at least one physiologic or biochemical property using the detector positioned at least partially within the elongated member, wherein the detector is located along a distal end of the second passageway.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the elongated member comprises a sheath.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the elongated member comprises a catheter.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the separate device comprises a catheter.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the separate device comprises at least one of a guidewire and an introducer.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the bodily lumen of a subject comprises a blood vessel.
