Abstract

An apparatus, method and computer-readable storage medium for guiding a player to the completion of a task during game play. The player selects a control device in a graphical user interface device generated by a processor. In response to the selection, a hint is provided to the user in the graphical user interface that presents a game board to a player. The player may use the hint to accomplish the task.

Claims (38)

1. A system for processing an online game, comprising:

a server for hosting the online game, the server configured for,

outputting a game board for display on a user display device, the game board including a character, a plurality of regions and a plurality of objects disposed within the plurality of regions, wherein the character is movable within the plurality of regions and is capable of interacting with at least one of the plurality of objects;

receiving an input from the user display device, the received input corresponding to an action of the character in the game board;

presenting a task in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the task in the server;

presenting a show-me control adjacent to the task in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the show-me control in the server, the selection of the show-me control is configured to cause movement of a camera view of the game board to center to a location of an object related to the selected task, and the object related to the selected task is highlighted by a color to provide contrast to the object relative to other content presented on the game board and identified by an indicator that is animated and points toward the object related to the selected task; and

displaying a hint in at least one of the plurality of regions of the game board displayed in the user display device, the hint including an instruction how to accomplish at least a portion of the task.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the task is superimposed over at least one of the plurality of regions of the game board displayed in the user display device.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising receiving an input in the server indicating the selected task has been accomplished, and when said selected task has been accomplished removing the color provided to highlight the selected task.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the highlighting with the color functions as an indication in the game board displayed in the user display device.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the movement of the camera view further includes providing a zoomed in view to the objected related to the selected task.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the movement of the camera view further includes providing a panned out view to the objected related to the selected task.

7. The system of claim 3 , wherein the indicator provided in the game board displayed on the user display device is an arrow-shaped indicator oriented over the selected one of the plurality of objects.

8. The system of claim 3 , wherein the indicator provided in the game board displayed on the user display device is an oscillating indicator.

9. The system of claim 3 , wherein the indicator provided in the game board displayed on the user display device is a high contrast outlining one or more of the plurality of objects.

10. A method for processing an online game comprising:

outputting a game board from a server, the game board for display on a user display device, the game board including a character, a plurality of regions and a plurality of objects disposed within the plurality of regions, wherein the character is movable within the plurality of regions and is capable of interacting with at least one of the plurality of objects;

receiving an input from the user display device, the received input corresponding to an action of the character in the game board;

presenting a task in a task list in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the task in the server;

presenting a show-me control adjacent to the task in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the show-me control in the server, the selection of the show-me control is configured to cause pan and zoom of a camera view of the game board to center to a location of an object related to the selected task, and the object related to the selected task is at least partially changed in color to contrast the object relative to other content presented on the game board and identified by an indicator that is animated and points toward the object related to the selected task; and

displaying a hint in at least one of the plurality of regions of the game board displayed in the user display device, the hint including an instruction how to accomplish at least a portion of the task.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the task is superimposed over at least one of the plurality of regions of the game board displayed in the user display device.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising receiving an input in the server indicating the task has been accomplished and then causing the color change provided to contrast the object to be discontinued.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the color change is an indication provided in the game board displayed on the user display device, and the indicator is an arrow-shaped indicator over the selected one of the plurality of objects.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the color change is an indication provided in the game board displayed on the user display device, and the indicator is an oscillating indicator.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the color change is an indication provided in the game board displayed on the user display device, and the indicator is a high contrast outlining one or more of the plurality of objects.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium embodied with program instructions for causing a processor to execute a method for processing an online comprising:

outputting a game board from a server, the server including the processor, the game board for display on a user display device, the game board including a character, a plurality of regions and a plurality of objects disposed within the plurality of regions, wherein the character is movable within the plurality of regions and is capable of interacting with at least one of the plurality of objects;

receiving an input from the user display device, the received input corresponding to an action of the character in the game board;

presenting a task in a task list in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the task in the server;

presenting a show-me control adjacent to the task in the game board displayed in the user display device;

receiving a selection of the show-me control in the server, the selection of the show-me control is configured to switch from the task list to the game board and cause a zoom of a camera view of the game board to center to a location of an object related to the selected task, and the object related to the selected task is at least partially changed in color to contrast the object relative to other content presented on the game board and identified by an indicator that is animated and points toward the object related to the selected task; and

displaying a hint in at least one of the plurality of regions of the game board displayed in the user display device, the hint including an instruction how to accomplish at least a portion of the task.
