Abstract

The present invention provides a stabilized hypohalous acid solution (or formulation thereof), which may be conveniently packaged for sale, or stored for later use on demand. The invention further provides methods of making the stabilized hypohalous acid solutions, as well as methods of use for disinfecting mammalian tissue, including wounds and burns, and treating skin irritations, among other uses.

Claims (13)

1. A method for treating inflammation associated with an allergic reaction in a subject, comprising: administering a hypochlorous acid composition to the affected area, wherein the composition has an available free chlorine (AFC) content of from about 100 to about 1000 ppm and is stabilized by at least an equal molar amount of dissolved inorganic carbon incorporated in the form of a bicarbonate salt, the composition being an aqueous solution, cream, foam, or gel, formulated within a pH of from 4.4 to 7.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has an AFC content of from about 100 ppm to about 500 ppm.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is present at a molar ratio of not more than 5:1 with respect to the AFC content.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition contains 300 to 1500 mg/L of a bicarbonate salt.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has AFC of greater than about 300 ppm, a conductivity of from about 1 mS/cm to about 10 mS/cm, and a pH of from 5 to 6.5.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition further comprises phosphoric acid.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises phosphate buffer.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the allergic reaction is associated with cellular histamine and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a gel.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an aqueous solution.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the affected area is the skin.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the affected area is the eyes.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has atopic dermatitis.
