Abstract

Embodiments of a tie plate sorter are disclosed wherein the tie plates are sorted and fed to an output device for further feeding to a tie plate distribution system. The tie plates may be oriented as needed. Exemplary methods are also provided.

Claims (13)

1. A tie plate sorter assembly, comprising:

a tie plate receiver comprising a first substantially cylindrical driving ring and a second cylindrical driving ring;

said tie plate receiver further comprising at least one tie plate receiving surface extending between said first and second substantially cylindrical driving rings;

said at least one tie plate receiving surface having a plurality of pockets spaced circumferentially about the tie plate receiving surface for allowing at least one tie plate to pass from an interior of said tie plate receiving surface to an exterior of said tie plate receiving surface;

a magnetic retaining mechanism engaging at least one of said tie plate receiving surface or said plurality of pockets, to retain said at least one tie plate until said tie plate is released.

2. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is electromagnetic.

3. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated depending on the position of said tie plate sorter.

4. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated electrically.

5. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated mechanically.

6. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said tie plate sorter is mounted on one of a bed or a trailer.

7. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 further comprising a drive assembly which engages said first and second cylindrical driving rings to rotate said first and second cylindrical rings.

8. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , said magnetic retaining mechanism retaining said tie plates in a first position and releasing said tie plates in a second position.

9. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an external conveyor which receives said at least one tie plate from said receiver.
