Abstract

A device is disclosed for reducing a vertebral compression fracture, comprising a superior end plate and an inferior end plate disposed along a vertical axis. The superior end plate and the inferior end plate are slidably separable in a vertical direction along the vertical axis. An interior chamber is provided in fluid communication with a port extending from an exterior to the interior chamber. The device is deployable within a vertebral body and expandable within the vertebral body by injecting a flowable material into the interior chamber thereby displacing the superior and inferior end plates along the vertical axis.

Claims (35)

1. A spinal system comprising:

an upper plate having a proximal end and a distal end;

a lower plate in opposition to the upper plate;

a posterior support leg engaged, at the proximal end, with the upper plate at a first corner and the lower plate at a second corner; and

an anterior support leg engaged, at the distal end, with the upper plate at a third corner and the lower plate at a fourth corner,

wherein the anterior support leg is configured to removably engage a plunger, wherein sliding movement of the plunger moves the spinal system between a collapsed state and an expanded state,

wherein the first, second, third, and fourth corners have a reduced thickness and are flexible to allow the upper plate and the lower plate to move toward each other in the collapsed state and to move away from each other in the expanded state such that in the expanded state, the upper endplate is generally perpendicular to at least one of the anterior and posterior support legs, and in the collapsed state, the upper endplate is generally angled relative to at least one of the anterior and posterior support legs, and

wherein the spinal system is biased towards the expanded state.

2. The spinal system of claim 1 , wherein the upper plate is configured to be substantially parallel to the lower plate.

3. The spinal system of claim 1 , wherein the upper plate and the lower plate are configured to reduce a vertebral compression fracture when deployed to the expanded state by the plunger.

4. The spinal system of claim 1 , further comprising an interior chamber when in the expanded state.

5. The spinal system of claim 4 , wherein the interior chamber is configured to receive material facilitating at least one of bone growth and bone fusion.

6. The spinal system of claim 5 , wherein the interior chamber is configured to receive the material from the plunger via a plurality of holes in the plunger.

7. The spinal system of claim 1 , wherein the upper plate, the lower plate, the posterior support leg, and the anterior support leg form a box-like structure when in the expanded state.

8. The spinal system of claim 1 , wherein the upper plate, the lower plate, the posterior support leg, and the anterior support leg are formed of a polymer material.

9. The spinal system of claim 8 , wherein the polymer material is PEEK.

10. The spinal system of claim 1 , wherein the spinal system is configured to be inserted into a vertebral body in the collapsed state.

11. A spinal system comprising:

an upper plate having a proximal end and a distal end;

a lower plate in opposition to the upper plate;

a posterior support leg engaged, at the proximal end, with the upper plate and the lower plate; and

an anterior support leg engaged, at the distal end, with the upper plate and the lower plate,

wherein the anterior support leg is configured to removably engage a plunger, wherein sliding movement of the plunger moves the spinal system between a collapsed state and an expanded state, wherein the plunger extends past the posterior support leg, between the upper plate and the lower plate, to engage an inner face of the anterior support leg, and

wherein the posterior support leg and the anterior support leg are configured to have a collapsible connection with the upper plate and the lower plate such that movement of the plunger corresponds to the upper plate and the lower plate to move towards each other in the collapsed state and move away from each other in the expanded state,

wherein in the collapsed state, the upper endplate is generally angled relative to at least one of the anterior and posterior support legs, and

wherein the spinal system is biased towards the expanded state.

12. The spinal system of claim 11 , wherein the upper plate is configured to be substantially parallel to the lower plate.

13. The spinal system of claim 11 , wherein the upper plate and the lower plate are configured to reduce a vertebral compression fracture when deployed to the expanded state by the plunger.

14. The spinal system of claim 11 , further comprising an interior chamber when in the expanded state.

15. The spinal system of claim 14 , wherein the interior chamber is configured to receive material facilitating at least one of bone growth and bone fusion.

16. The spinal system of claim 15 , wherein the interior chamber is configured to receive the material from the plunger via a plurality of holes in the plunger.

17. The spinal system of claim 11 , wherein the upper plate, the lower plate, the posterior support leg, and the anterior support leg form a box-like structure when in the expanded state.

18. The spinal system of claim 11 , wherein the upper plate, the lower plate, the posterior support leg, and the anterior support leg are formed of a polymer material.

19. The spinal system of claim 18 , wherein the polymer material is PEEK.

20. The spinal system of claim 11 , wherein the spinal system is configured to be inserted into a vertebral body in the collapsed state.
