Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer code products for monitoring the behavior, health, and/or characteristics of an animal are disclosed herein. In one implementation, the animal is positioned inside a waste container placed on a system that is adapted to determine, record and communicate over a network various animal health parameters. These parameters can be processed to determine trends, statistics and changes of animal physiological functions. The results can be used to access animal health conditions and issue warnings alarms, messages, and other notifications to designated caretakers. These notifications may be displayed using various means such as computers and/or mobile devices. Data retrieval and review capability can provide improved understanding of an animal's health conditions and facilitate early illness detection.

Claims (35)

1. An apparatus for monitoring an animal, the apparatus comprising:

a container for holding food or water for consumption by the animal;

a scale, operably connected to the container for determining at least one of an amount of food added to the container or an amount of water added to the container;

an interface configured to send data indicative of at least one of the amount of food added to the container, or the amount of water added to the container, to a processor configured to calculate derived data associated with the animal, and

a wireless data transmitter configured to transmit the derived data or data indicative of at least one of the amount of food added to the container, the amount of food consumed by the animal, the amount of water added to the container, or the amount of water consumed by the animal to a remote wireless device to be displayed on a display of the remote wireless device;

the derived data including at least two of:

the amount of food consumed by the animal over a period of time,

the amount of food added to the food container over a period of time,

the amount of water consumed by the animal over a period of time,

the amount of water added to the water container over a period of time,

a length of time since food was last added to the container, and

a length of time since water was added to the container.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor to detect the presence of the animal at the apparatus.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the sensor to detect the presence of the animal comprises an identification sensor to identify the animal from a plurality of animals.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the identification sensor is a camera and the animal is identified using data indicative of a video or a picture of the animal.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interface comprises a network adapter configured to couple to a wireless network.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the network comprises a network adapter configured to couple to a network and wherein the processor is remote from the apparatus and the network adapter is configured to send the data indicative of at least one of the amount of food added to the container, or the amount of water added to the container, to a processor configured to calculate derived data associated with the animal to the remote processor via the network.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a storage device.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a scale for measuring a weight of the animal.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the derived data further includes at least one of:

an average weight of the animal over a period of time;

a maximum weight of the animal over a period of time; and

a minimum weight of the animal over a period of time.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the derived data further includes a rate of change of the animal's body weight over time.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the processor generates a growth chart plotting the derived rate of change data against an ideal growth chart for an animal of the same species, breed or gender as the animal.

12. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the derived data further includes at least one of:

an average, maximum and/or minimum rates of food and/or water consumption, expressed in weight of food and/or water consumed per unit of time;

a cumulative duration of time between each detection of the presence of the animal and departure of the animal;

a cumulative number of time the presence of the animal is detected over a period of time;

an amount of time since the last time presence of the animal is detected; and

an average time interval between instances where presence of the animal is detected.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to compare either the derived data to a threshold alert, and send an alert to the remote wireless device when the derived data crosses the threshold alert data.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the threshold alert is based on the length of time since food was last added to the container, or the length of time since water was added to the container, the alert signaling that food or water is due to be added to the container.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the processor is further configured to compare either the derived data to a threshold alert, and wherein send an alert to the remote wireless device when the derived data crosses the threshold alert data, wherein the threshold alert is based on the rate of change exceeding a maximum rate or falling below a minimum rate.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the remote wireless device is a smart phone.
