Abstract

An endoscopic forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft. An end effector assembly operatively connects to a distal end of the shaft and has a pair of first and second jaw members. One of the first and second jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, to a clamping position. One of the first and second jaw members includes one or more cam slots defined therein and configured to receive a cam member that upon movement thereof rotates the movable jaw member from the open position to the clamping position. A resilient member is operably coupled to the jaw member that includes the one or more cam slots. The resilient member is configured to provide a camming force to the cam slot and to bias the first and second jaw members in the clamping position.

Claims (16)

1. An endoscopic forceps, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from the housing and including a distal end portion;

an end effector assembly operatively connected to the distal end portion of the shaft, the end effector assembly including a first jaw member and a second jaw member, at least one of the first or second jaw members movable relative to the other from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are spaced relative to one another, to a closed position, wherein the first and second jaw members are configured to grasp tissue, the first jaw member including a distal end portion and a proximal end portion;

a pivot post configured to couple the distal end portion of the shaft to the proximal end portion of the first jaw member;

a drive element coupled to the proximal end portion of the first jaw member and movable between proximal and distal positions relative to the shaft; and

a spring member defined by a spiral-shaped compression slit defined in the proximal end portion of the first jaw member, the spring member coupled to the pivot post and configured to flex relative to the pivot post to enable the first and second jaw members to move between the open and closed positions as the drive element moves between the proximal and distal positions.

2. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the endoscopic forceps is adapted to couple to an electrosurgical energy source.

3. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the pivot post includes a boss that prevents the pivot post from rotating.

4. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the spiral-shaped compression slit includes at least two branches that meet at a location adjacent to the pivot post.

5. The endoscopic forceps of claim 4 , wherein the branches are non-intersecting.

6. The endoscopic forceps of claim 4 , wherein the branches wrap around the pivot post.

7. The endoscopic forceps of claim 6 , wherein each branch of the spiral-shaped compression slit extends along a spiral path through the proximal end portion of the first jaw member.

8. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the spring member is positioned to maintain the first and second jaw members in at least one of the open or closed positions.

9. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the drive element couples to the proximal end portion of the first jaw member by a pin.

10. The endoscopic forceps of claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion of the first jaw member supports a seal plate.
