Abstract

A method and system for authenticating a user to access a computer system. The method comprises communicating security information to the computer system, and providing the computer system with an implicit input. The method further comprises determining whether the security information and implicit input match corresponding information associated with the user. The method further comprises granting the user access to the computer system in the event of a satisfactory match. When authenticating the user, the method and system consider the possibility of the user being legitimate but subject to duress or force by a computer hacker.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a touch screen sensitive to a user's touch;

a fingerprint acquisition device to sense a fingerprint; and

a user access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen and the fingerprint acquisition device, wherein the processing circuit is configured to:

grant access to a set of first files without granting access to content of second files stored on the apparatus in response to a user performing, on the touch screen, a geometric pattern in a predetermined direction;

grant access to the content of the second files in response to the user entering, on the fingerprint acquisition device, a fingerprint that is determined by the processing circuit to match a known fingerprint; and

grant access to the content of the second files in response to the user entering, on the touch screen, a password that is determined by the processing circuit to match a known password.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern and to use the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern as a first user-interactive step after the apparatus is deactivated and reactivated.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive data representative of the user-entered fingerprint and to use the data representative of the user-entered fingerprint to determine if the user-entered fingerprint matches the known fingerprint.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive the data representative of the user-entered fingerprint as a first user-interactive step after the system is deactivated and reactivated.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the processing circuit is further configured to receive data representative of the user-entered password and to use the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the user-performed geometric pattern is a line, a circle, or a rectangle.

8. A method comprising:

granting, with an access system of an apparatus comprising memory storing data and computer hardware, limited access to the stored data when the computer hardware detects a geometric pattern performed by a user in a predetermined direction on a touch screen of the apparatus; and

granting, with the computer hardware, additional access to the stored data when at least a first satisfactory match or a second satisfactory match occurs, the first satisfactory match occurring when the computer hardware determines that a fingerprint entered by the user on a fingerprint acquisition device matches a known fingerprint, and the second satisfactory match occurring when the computer hardware determines that a password entered by the user on the touch screen matches a known password.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the limited access is read-only access.

10. The method of claim 8 further comprising receiving, with the computer hardware, data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern as a first user-interactive step after the apparatus is deactivated and reactivated.

The method of claim 8 further comprising, after the user performs the geometric pattern in the predetermined direction, receiving, with the computer hardware, data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern, and using, with the computer hardware, the data representative of the user-performed geometric pattern to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

The method of claim 8 further comprising, after the fingerprint acquisition device acquires the fingerprint, receiving, with the computer hardware, data representative of the acquired fingerprint, and using, with the computer hardware, the data representative of the acquired fingerprint to determine if the acquired fingerprint matches the known fingerprint.

13. The method of claim 8 further comprising, after the user enters the password on the touch screen, receiving, with the computer hardware, data representative of the user-entered password, and using, with the computer hardware, the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein the user-performed geometric pattern is a line.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a touch screen sensitive to a user's touch;

a device to sense a physical feature of a user;

memory to store at least one file; and

an access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen, the device, and the memory;

wherein the access system grants limited access to the apparatus based upon the user performing, on the touch screen, a geometric pattern in a specified direction that is detected by the access system; and

wherein the access system grants additional access to the apparatus based upon one or more of the device sensing a physical feature that is determined by the access system to match a known physical feature, and a user entering, on the touch screen, a password that is determined by the access system to match a known password.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the physical feature is a fingerprint, a retina, or a voice.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein when the access system receives touch screen input data determined from the user's touch and representing the user-performed geometric pattern, the access system uses the touch screen input data to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein when the access system receives data representative of the sensed physical feature, the access system uses the data representative of the sensed physical feature to determine if the sensed physical feature matches the known physical feature.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein when the access system receives data representative of the user-entered password, the access system uses the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.

20. An electronic device comprising:

a touch screen;

a fingerprint acquisition device;

memory to store at least a first file and a second file; and

a user access system comprising a processing circuit coupled to the touch screen, the fingerprint acquisition device, and the memory;

the user access system to grant limited access to the first file without granting access to the second file in response to a user performing, on the touch screen, a geometric pattern in a predetermined direction that is detected by the user access system; and

the user access system to grant additional access to the first file and access to the second file in response to at least one matching event, the at least one matching event selected from the group consisting of a match, determined by the user access system, between an acquired fingerprint and a known fingerprint, and a match, determined by the user access system, between a password entered by the user on the touch screen and a known password.

21. The electronic device of claim 20 wherein the user access system receives touch screen input data determined from the user's touch and representing the user-performed geometric pattern, and uses the touch screen input data to detect the user-performed geometric pattern.

22. The electronic device of claim 20 wherein the user access system receives data representative of the acquired fingerprint and uses the data representative of the acquired fingerprint to determine if the acquired fingerprint matches the known fingerprint.

23. The electronic device of claim 20 wherein the user access system receives data representative of the user-entered password and uses the data representative of the user-entered password to determine if the user-entered password matches the known password.
