Abstract

An interconnect system includes a first circuit board, first and second connectors connected to the first circuit board, and a transceiver including an optical engine and arranged to receive and transmit electrical and optical signals through a cable, to convert optical signals received from the cable into electrical signals, and to convert electrical signals received from the first connector into optical signals to be transmitted through the cable. The transceiver is arranged to mate with the first and second connectors so that at least some converted electrical signals are transmitted to the first connector and so that at least some electrical signals received from the cable are transmitted to the second connector.

Claims (42)

1. A method of mating a transceiver to a two-piece connector system, the transceiver including a circuit board with at least one notch and a U-clip, and the two-piece connector system including front and back connectors, the method comprising:

pressing the transceiver down into the back connector so that the at least one notch in the circuit board aligns with a post in the back connector;

pushing the transceiver forward so that the front end of the circuit board is inserted into the front connector; and

pushing the U-clip down such that a leg of the U-clip engages a notch on the back connector.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the U-clip secures the transceiver so the transceiver does not unmate from the two-piece connector system.

3. A method of unmating a transceiver mated to a two-piece connector system, the transceiver including a circuit board with at least one notch and a U-clip, and the two-piece connector system including front and back connectors, the method comprising:

pulling up on the U-clip such that a leg of the U-clip disengages from the at least one notch on the back connector;

pulling the transceiver out of the front connector so that a post on the back connector align with the at least one notch of the transceiver circuit board;

pulling out the transceiver from the back connector.

4. A transceiver comprising:

a circuit board;

an optical engine mounted on the circuit board;

an optical cable connected to the optical engine;

a first slot on a first side of the transceiver;

a second slot on a second side of the transceiver opposite to the first side of the transceiver; and

a U-clip with first and second legs, the U-clip being movable relative to the first and second slots to engage with the first and second slots; wherein the first and second slots are oriented perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the circuit board.

5. The transceiver according to claim 4 , further comprising a heatsink, wherein the first and second slots are in the heatsink.

6. The transceiver according to claim 5 , wherein the heatsink defines a housing of the transceiver.

7. The transceiver according to claim 4 , wherein the U-clip includes a tab between the first and second legs.

8. The transceiver according to claim 7 , wherein the tab moves the U-clip in the first and second slots when a force is applied thereto.

9. The transceiver according to claim 4 , wherein:

the U-clip includes two arms; and

each of the two arms is shorter than an adjacent one of the first and second legs and extends along the adjacent one of the first and second legs.

10. The transceiver according to claim 9 , wherein:

each of the two arms includes first and second curved sections;

the first curved section is at a top of the arm; and

the second curved section is at a bottom of the arm.

11. The transceiver according to claim 4 , wherein the circuit board includes first lands on a front edge of the circuit board and second lands on a bottom of the circuit board.

12. The transceiver according to claim 11 , wherein the optical cable is connected to a back side of the transceiver opposite to the front edge.

13. The transceiver according to claim 11 , wherein the transceiver is an optical transceiver, and the optical cable includes an optical fiber.

14. The transceiver according to claim 11 , wherein the first lands mate with contacts of a front connector in a two-piece connector system when the transceiver is mated to the two-piece connector system.

15. The transceiver according to claim 11 , wherein the second lands mate with contacts of a back connector in a two-piece connector system when the transceiver is mated to the two-piece connector system.

16. The transceiver according to claim 4 , wherein each of the first and second slots includes a ramp that stops the U-clip from being inserted past the ramp.

17. The transceiver according to claim 16 , wherein:

the U-clip includes two arms;

each of the two arms is shorter than an adjacent one of the first and second legs and extends along the adjacent one of the first and second legs; and

each of the two arms engages with a corresponding ramp to stop the U-clip from being inserted past the ramp.

18. The transceiver according to claim 17 , wherein:

each of the first and second slots includes a depression that engages a bottom of each of the two arms; and

the depressions stop the U-clip from being pulled out of the transceiver.

19. The transceiver according to claim 18 , wherein the depressions engage bottoms of the two arms when the first and second legs are engaged with notches in a connector of a two-piece connector system to provide resistance when the U-clip is pulled up to disengage the first and second legs from the notches.

20. The transceiver according to claim 4 , wherein, to mate the transceiver to a two-piece connector system, the U-clip is movable into the first and second slots such that the U-clip engages with a connector of the two-piece connector system.
