Abstract

Various embodiments described herein facilitate multi-lingual communications. The systems and methods of some embodiments enable multi-lingual communications through different modes of communication including, for example, Internet-based chat, e-mail, text-based mobile phone communications, postings to online forums, postings to online social media services, and the like. Certain embodiments implement communication systems and methods that translate text between two or more languages. Users of the systems and methods may be incentivized to submit corrections for inaccurate or erroneous translations, and may receive a reward for these submissions. Systems and methods for assessing the accuracy of translations are described.

Claims (63)

1. A method, comprising:

performing by one or more computer processors:

providing an online chat system;

selecting, from a data store, a word or phrase associated with a failure to translate a message from a first language to a second language in the online chat system;

selecting a user from whom to solicit feedback for the translation failure;

generating a query to request feedback from the user;

offering an incentive to the user, wherein the incentive is determined based on a complexity of the word or phrase or an importance of the word or phrase;

receiving the feedback from the user, the feedback potentially assisting to translate the word or phrase;

rewarding the user with the incentive;

updating at least one of a transformation module and a translation data store according to the feedback from the user,

wherein the transformation module is implemented on at least one server and is configured to transform messages to a form more suitable for translation, and

wherein the translation data store is implemented on the at least one server and is configured to store and provide translated text;

using at least one computer processor and at least one of the updated transformation module and the updated translation data store to translate a second message comprising the selected word or phrase; and

providing the translation of the second message in the online chat system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the word or phrase comprises chatspeak in one of the first language and the second language.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user is selected based on at least one of a confidence measure of the user, a quota associated with the user, an incentive previously rewarded, a preference of the user, and a language ability of the user.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedback comprises a definition for the word or phrase in one of the first language and the second language.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

evaluating the competency of the user based on an accuracy of the feedback.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein updating at least one of the transformation module and the translation data store comprises updating a transformation or translation of the word or phrase from the first language to the second language.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the incentive is rewarded once the feedback is approved.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the feedback is approved once the feedback is determined not to be fraudulent.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the feedback is approved once the feedback is accepted as accurately defining the word or phrase.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

preventing the word or phrase from being subsequently selected for additional feedback for the failure.

11. A system, comprising:

one or more computer processors programmed to perform operations comprising:

providing an online chat system;

selecting, from a data store, a word or phrase associated with a failure to translate a message from a first language to a second language in the online chat system;

selecting a user from whom to solicit feedback for the translation failure;

generating a query to request feedback from the user;

offering an incentive to the user, wherein the incentive is determined based on a complexity of the word or phrase or an importance of the word or phrase;

receiving the feedback from the user, the feedback potentially assisting to translate the word or phrase;

rewarding the user with the incentive;

updating at least one of a transformation module and a translation data store according to the feedback from the user,

wherein the transformation module is implemented on at least one server and is configured to transform messages to a form more suitable for translation, and

wherein the translation data store is implemented on the at least one server and is configured to store and provide translated text;

using at least one computer processor and at least one of the updated transformation module and the updated translation data store to translate a second message comprising the selected word or phrase; and

providing the translation of the second message in the online chat system.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the word or phrase comprises chatspeak in one of the first language and the second language.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the feedback comprises a definition for the word or phrase in one of the first language and the second language.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

evaluating the competency of the user based on an accuracy of the feedback.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein updating at least one of the transformation module and the translation data store comprises updating a transformation or translation of the word or phrase from the first language to the second language.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the incentive is rewarded once the feedback is approved.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the feedback is approved once the feedback is determined not to be fraudulent.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the feedback is approved once the feedback is accepted as accurately defining the word or phrase.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

preventing the word or phrase from being subsequently selected for additional feedback for the failure.

20. An article of manufacture, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by one or more computers, cause the computers to perform operations comprising:

providing an online chat system;

selecting, from a data store, a word or phrase associated with a failure to translate a message from a first language to a second language in the online chat system;

selecting a user from whom to solicit feedback for the translation failure;

generating a query to request feedback from the user;

offering an incentive to the user, wherein the incentive is determined based on a complexity of the word or phrase or an importance of the word or phrase;

receiving the feedback from the user, the feedback potentially assisting to translate the word or phrase;

rewarding the user with the incentive;

updating at least one of a transformation module and a translation data store according to the feedback from the user,

wherein the transformation module is implemented on at least one server and is configured to transform messages to a form more suitable for translation, and

wherein the translation data store is implemented on the at least one server and is configured to store and provide translated text;

using at least one computer processor and at least one of the updated transformation module and the updated translation data store to translate a second message comprising the selected word or phrase; and

providing the translation of the second message in the online chat system.
