Abstract

A minimally invasive system comprises an elongate medical instrument including a lumen; an elongate, flexible stylet removably receivable within the lumen; a sensor system coupled to the stylet, the sensor system configured to detect characteristics of at least a portion of the elongate medical instrument; and a processor. The processor comprises an error detection module configured to receive the detected characteristics from the sensor system; compare the detected characteristics with expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument; and notify a user of a deviation between the detected characteristics and the expected characteristics. The processor further comprises a path planning module configured to intraoperatively generate, based on a shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument detected by the sensor system, a target trajectory for continuing advancement of the elongate medical instrument within a patient anatomy.

Claims (35)

1. A minimally invasive system, comprising:

an elongate medical instrument including a lumen having an inner diameter;

an elongate, flexible stylet configured to be removably received within the lumen, the stylet including an outer diameter that is smaller than the inner diameter of the lumen of the elongate medical instrument;

a sensor system coupled to the stylet, the sensor system configured to detect characteristics of at least a portion of the elongate medical instrument, the characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument including at least a shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument; and

a processor comprising:

an error detection module configured to:

receive the detected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument from the sensor system;

compare the detected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument with expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument; and

notify a user of a deviation between the detected characteristics and the expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument; and

a path planning module configured to intraoperatively generate, based on the shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument detected by the sensor system, a target trajectory for continuing advancement of the elongate medical instrument within a patient anatomy.

2. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system is further configured to use localized position data provided by a position sensor to measure characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument.

3. The minimally invasive system of claim 2 , wherein the position sensor comprises an EM sensor.

4. The minimally invasive system of claim 2 , wherein the lumen of the elongate medical instrument is configured to maintain an axial position of the position sensor in substantially parallel alignment with a longitudinal axis of the elongate medical instrument.

5. The minimally invasive system of claim 2 , wherein the sensor system is configured to be substantially aligned with a longitudinal axis of the elongate medical instrument when the stylet is received within the elongate medical instrument.

6. The minimally invasive system of claim 2 , wherein the sensor system is configured to measure at least one of a shape characteristic, a position characteristic, or an orientation characteristic of at least a portion of the stylet.

7. The minimally invasive system of claim 2 , wherein the stylet comprises at least one of an optical fiber, a fiber Bragg grating, a bend-enhanced fiber, a nitinol wire, or a piezoresistive element.

8. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument include model data indicating a modeled trajectory of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument.

9. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument include target data indicating a desired trajectory of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument.

10. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the user notification comprises at least one of a visual notification, an aural notification, a tactile notification, or a graphical notification.

11. The minimally invasive system of claim 10 , wherein the processor further comprises a graphics module configured to display the graphical notification on a display screen, wherein the graphical notification comprises a graphical representation of a detected trajectory of the elongate medical instrument overlaid on a graphical representation of an expected trajectory of the elongate medical instrument.

12. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the comparison of the detected characteristics with the expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument includes determining whether the deviation between the detected characteristics and the expected characteristics of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument exceeds a preset limit.

13. The minimally invasive system of claim 12 , wherein when the deviation exceeds the preset limit by a maximum deviation, the user notification includes a procedure abort notification.

14. The minimally invasive system of claim 12 , wherein when the deviation exceeds the preset limit by a maximum deviation, the minimally invasive system freezes operation.

15. The minimally invasive system of claim 12 , wherein when the deviation exceeds the preset limit by less than a maximum deviation, the user notification includes adjustment instructions.

16. The minimally invasive system of claim 12 , further comprising:

an actuator configured to actuate at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument,

wherein when the deviation exceeds the preset limit by less than a maximum deviation, the actuator automatically adjusts the shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument.

17. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an actuator configured to actuate the elongate medical instrument,

wherein the processor further comprises a control planning module configured to generate control signals for the actuator.

18. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an actuator configured to actuate the elongate medical instrument,

wherein the processor further comprises a control planning module configured to generate control signals for the actuator, wherein the control signals are based on the target trajectory generated by the path planning module.

19. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the path planning module is further configured to determine, based on the shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument, a total insertion depth of the elongate medical instrument.

20. The minimally invasive system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further comprises a shape modeling module configured to determine at least one property of the patient anatomy based on the shape of at least the portion of the elongate medical instrument as the elongate medical instrument is inserted into the patient anatomy.
