Abstract

An interactive television program guide is provided. The interactive television program guide provides a user with the opportunity to select a language for playing television programming and displaying program guide text. Television program audio in the desired language may be obtained from a SAP or digital audio track and played in the selected language. Television related information in the desired language may be obtained from a digital track. If television program audio or related information is not provided in the selected language, the program guide may use a default language. The program guide may coordinate program guide display screen text with languages available for television programs when the programs are broadcast to users.

Claims (54)

1. A method for generating for simultaneous display media guidance data in at least two languages, the method comprising:

receiving, at a program guide equipment, from a user input device, a user selection of a preferred language for interacting with an interactive media guidance application;

subsequent to receiving the user selection of the preferred language:

receiving, at the program guide equipment, from the user input device, an indication to generate for simultaneous display a first media guidance data relating to a first program and a second media guidance data relating to a second program;

determining, by a control circuitry of the program guide equipment, that the first media guidance data is available in the preferred language, and that the second media guidance data is not available in the preferred language, wherein the second media guidance data is available in an alternate language; and

based on the determining that the first media guidance data is available in the preferred language, and that the second media guidance data is not available in the preferred language, generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry, the first media guidance data in the preferred language, and the second media guidance data in the alternate language.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving, at the program guide equipment, from the user input device, a user selection of the alternate language for interacting with the interactive media guidance application.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

automatically selecting, by the control circuitry, the alternate language based on the user selection of the preferred language for interacting with the interactive media guidance application.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the program guide equipment comprises at least one of user television equipment and program guide distribution equipment.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first media guidance data includes a first list of languages in which audio for the first program is available and wherein the second media guidance data includes a second list of languages in which audio for the second program is available.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry, the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data comprises:

generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry, a first time associated with the first program in a time format associated with the preferred language and a second time associated with the second program in a time format associated with the alternate language.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry, the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data comprises:

generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry, a first date associated with the first program in a date format associated with the preferred language and a second date associated with the second program in a date format associated with the alternate language.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a user request for more information about the first program;

generating for display additional information about the first program in the preferred language.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining, by the control circuitry, that a third media guidance data associated with a third program is available in a default language, wherein the third media guidance data is not available in the preferred language and the third media guidance data is not available in the alternate language; and

based on the determining that the third media guidance data is available in the default language, generating for display, by the control circuitry, simultaneous with the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data, the third media guidance data in the default language.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a user request to playback the first program;

selecting audio associated with the first program, wherein the audio associated with the first program is in the preferred language; and

generating for display the playback of the selected program with the selected audio in the preferred language.

11. A system for generating for simultaneous display media guidance data in at least two languages, the system comprising:

a user input device; and

a program guide equipment including a control circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

receive, from the user input device, a user selection of a preferred language for interacting with an interactive media guidance application; and

subsequent to receiving the user selection of the preferred language:

receive, from the user input device, an indication to generate for simultaneous display a first media guidance data relating to a first program and a second media guidance data relating to a second program;

determine that the first media guidance data is available in the preferred language, and that the second media guidance data is not available in the preferred language, wherein the second media guidance data is available in an alternate language; and

based on the determination that the first media guidance data is available in the preferred language, and that the second media guidance data is not available in the preferred language, generate for simultaneous display, the first media guidance data in the preferred language, and the second media guidance data in the alternate language.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive, at the program guide equipment, from the user input device, a user selection of the alternate language for interacting with the interactive media guidance application.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

automatically select the alternate language based on the user selection of the preferred language for interacting with the interactive media guidance application.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the program guide equipment comprises at least one of user television equipment and program guide distribution equipment.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first media guidance data includes a first list of languages in which audio for the first program is available and wherein the second media guidance data includes a second list of languages in which audio for the second program is available.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to generate for simultaneous display the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data comprises control circuitry configured to:

generate for simultaneous display a first time associated with the first program in a time format associated with the preferred language and a second time associated with the second program in a time format associated with the alternate language.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to generate for simultaneous display the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data comprises control circuitry configured to:

generate for simultaneous display a first date associated with the first program in a date format associated with the preferred language and a second date associated with the second program in a date format associated with the alternate language.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive a user request for more information about the first program; and

generate for display additional information about the first program in the preferred language.

19. The system of claim 11 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that a third media guidance data associated with a third program is available in a default language, wherein the third media guidance data is not available in the preferred language and the third media guidance data is not available in the alternate language; and

based on the determination that the third media guidance data is available in the default language, generate for display simultaneous with the first media guidance data and the second media guidance data, the third media guidance data in the default language.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive a user request to playback the first program;

select audio associated with the first program, wherein the audio associated with the first program is in the preferred language; and

generate for display the playback of the selected program with the selected audio in the preferred language.
