Abstract

A network addressable appliance with digital multimedia recording capabilities has limited access including playback of stored multimedia content upon faulty connection with a service provider network. Upon a connectivity event, the network addressable appliance compares a retrieved hardware address for a connected residential gateway to a stored hardware address for an assigned residential gateway. If the two hardware addresses correspond, the network addressable appliance provides playback to stored multimedia content. The system helps prevent violations of digital rights management rules by restricting access to stored multimedia content while the network addressable appliance is connected to an unauthorized residential gateway. The system provides a user with limited access (i.e. playback) to multimedia content during service provider network outages.

Claims (43)

1. A multimedia access method, comprising:

recording, by a premises device, multimedia content received by a residential gateway coupled to the premises device;

responsive to detecting a loss of connectivity event between the residential gateway and a service provider network, verifying the residential gateway as an authorized residential gateway of a service provider; and

responsive to verifying the residential gateway as an authorized residential gateway, enabling a premises device coupled to the residential gateway to access and playback recorded multimedia content.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the residential gateway is coupled between the premises device and a wide area network.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the wide area network comprises a co-axial cable network.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing a decryption key and decoding the multimedia content in accordance with the decryption key.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

automatically rebooting the premises device in response to the loss of connectivity.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the multimedia content to a second premises device, wherein the second premises device is in communication with the residential gateway.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the residential gateway, the multimedia content, wherein the multimedia content comprises a stream of user datagram protocol (UDP) compliant multimedia content.

8. A customer premises device, comprising:

a processor; and

a computer readable medium, including processor executable program instructions that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

recording, by a premises device, multimedia content received by a residential gateway coupled to the premises device;

responsive to detecting a loss of connectivity event between the residential gateway and a service provider network, verifying the residential gateway as an authorized residential gateway of a service provider; and

responsive to verifying the residential gateway as an authorized residential gateway, enabling a customer premises device coupled to the residential gateway to access and playback recorded multimedia content.

9. The customer premises device of claim 8 , wherein the residential gateway is coupled between the customer premises device and a wide area network.

10. The customer premises device of claim 9 , wherein the wide area network comprises a co-axial cable access network.

11. The customer premises device of claim 8 , wherein the operations include:

accessing a decryption key for decoding the multimedia content.

12. The customer premises device of claim 8 , wherein the operations include:

automatically rebooting the customer premises device in response to the loss of connectivity.

13. The customer premises device of claim 8 , wherein the operations include:

providing the multimedia content to a second customer premises device, wherein the second customer premises device is in communication with the residential gateway.

14. The customer premises device of claim 8 , wherein the operations include:

receiving, from the residential gateway, the multimedia content, wherein the multimedia content comprises a stream of user datagram protocol (UDP) compliant multimedia content.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium including processor-executable program instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

recording, by a premises device, multimedia content received by a residential gateway coupled to the premises device;

responsive to detecting a loss of connectivity event between the gateway device and a service provider network, verifying the gateway device as an authorized gateway device of a service provider; and

responsive to verifying the gateway device as an authorized gateway device, enabling a set-top box coupled to the gateway device to access and playback recorded multimedia content.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the gateway device is coupled between the set-top box and a wide area network.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations include:

accessing a decryption key for decoding the multimedia content.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations include:

automatically rebooting the set-top box in response to the loss of connectivity.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations include:

providing the multimedia content to a second set-top box, wherein the second set-top box is in communication with the gateway device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations include:

receiving, from the gateway device, the multimedia content, wherein the multimedia content comprises a stream of user datagram protocol (UDP) compliant multimedia content.
