Abstract

A method and system for performing bone fusion and/or securing one or more bones, such as adjacent vertebra, are disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. An intervertebral cage comprising:

a first upper bar and opposing first lower bar;

a first and second separator movable between the first upper bar and the first lower bar to cause movement of the first upper bar towards and away from the first lower bar;

a second upper bar and opposing second lower bar;

a third and fourth separator movable between the second upper bar and the second lower bar to cause movement of the second upper bar towards and away from the second lower bar; and

a threaded rod;

wherein each of the bars include an arm extending from a side surface of each of the corresponding bars, the arms engaging the threaded rod;

wherein the threaded rod includes at least two channels for engaging the arms of the first and second upper and lower bars;

wherein the arm of the first upper bar and the arm of the second lower bar engage a first channel; and

wherein the arm of the first lower bar and the arm of the second upper bar engage a second channel.

2. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein each of the upper bars include a recess for receiving an end of the arm extending from the opposing upper bar;

wherein each of the lower bars include a recess for receiving an end of the arm extending from the opposing lower bar.

3. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein each of the upper bars include a channel for receiving the arm extending from the opposing upper bar;

wherein each of the lower bars include a channel for receiving the arm extending from the opposing lower bar.

4. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first pin extending into an opening provided in the first upper bar and an opening provided in the first lower bar; and

a second pin extending into an opening provided in the second upper bar and an opening provided in the second lower bar.

5. The intervertebral cage of claim 4 , wherein each of the first pin and the second pin is movable within the corresponding opening provided in the upper bar and the corresponding opening provided in the lower bar.

The intervertebral cage of claim 4 , wherein the opening provided in the first upper bar, the opening provided in the first lower bar, the opening provided in the second upper bar, and the opening provided in the second lower bar each comprise a recess, and wherein each of the first pin and the second pin includes a head received within a corresponding recess.

7. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first upper bar, the first lower bar, the second upper bar, and the second lower bar include a separator contact surface,

wherein at least one of the first separator, the second separator, the third separator, and the fourth separator includes a bar contact surface for contacting a corresponding separator contact surface such that the separator is movable along the corresponding separator contact surface.

8. The intervertebral cage of claim 7 , wherein the separator contact surface is inclined towards a midline of the bar.

9. The intervertebral cage of claim 7 , wherein the separator contact surface and the bar contact surface are stepped.

10. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first upper bar, the first lower bar, the second upper bar, and the second lower bar includes a groove on an inside surface,

wherein at least one of the first separator, the second separator, the third separator, and the fourth separator includes a projection extending from a side surface of the separator, the projection sized and configured to engage the groove.

11. The intervertebral cage of claim 10 , wherein the groove is inclined towards a midline of the bar.

12. The intervertebral cage of claim 10 , wherein the groove is stepped.

13. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein the first upper bar, the first lower bar, the second upper bar, and the second lower bar each include a first separator contact surface and a second separator contact surface located on opposite sides of a vertical midline of the bar, and

wherein the first separator, the second separator, the third separator, and the fourth separator each include an upper bar contact surface and a lower bar contact surface for contacting a separator contact surface of a corresponding bar, such that the first separator, the second separator, the third separator, and the fourth separator are moveable along the separator contact surfaces of the corresponding bars to cause movement of the upper and lower bars towards and away from each other.

14. The intervertebral cage of claim 13 , wherein each of the first separator, the second separator, the third separator, and the fourth separator has a height that defines a distance of separation between a corresponding upper and lower bar,

wherein the second separator has a height that defines a distance of separation between upper and lower bar.

15. The intervertebral cage of claim 14 , wherein the height of the second separator is different from the height of the first separator.

16. The intervertebral cage of claim 1 , wherein movement of a selected separator between a selected upper and lower bar causes vertical separation of the selected upper and lower bar in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal plane of the cage.
