Abstract

A system includes a first computer, a second computer, and an active computer system determining module. The first computer receives a second computer health signal from the second computer indicating a fault in the second computer and generates a first computer system health signal indicating a fault in the first and/or second computer. The active computer system determining module receives the first computer system health signal and generates a standby signal based on the first computer system health signal. The second computer receives the standby signal and disables one or more of its output ports based on the standby signal.

Claims (74)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a first computer of a first computer system, a second computer health signal, wherein the second computer health signal indicates a fault in a second computer;

generating, by the first computer, a first computer system health signal, wherein the first computer system health signal indicates a fault in at least one of the first computer and the second computer, wherein the first computer system further comprises a plurality of subsidiary computers, and the subsidiary computers are configured in a daisy chain to communicate the first computer system health signal from a first of the subsidiary computers to a last of the subsidiary computers in a sequential order;

receiving, by an active computer system determining module, the first computer system health signal;

generating, by the active computer system determining module, a standby signal;

receiving, by the second computer, the standby signal;

disabling, by the second computer, one or more output ports of the second computer based on the standby signal; and

communicating the first computer system health signal over the daisy chain via a wired communication channel wherein each of the subsidiary computers is further configured with an input port and an output port, and the input port receives the first computer system health signal and communicates the first computer system health signal to the output port via the wired communication channel.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forwarding, by the second computer, the standby signal to a third computer; and

disabling, by the third computer, one or more output ports of the third computer based on the standby signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

receiving, by the first computer, the second computer health signal comprises receiving the second computer health signal over a first communication channel;

receiving, by the second computer, the standby signal comprises receiving the standby signal over a second communication channel; and

the first communication channel and the second communication channel are different communication channels.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication channel comprises an Ethernet communication channel.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the active computer system determining module, an active signal;

receiving, by a fourth computer, the active signal; and

enabling, by the fourth computer, one or more output ports of the fourth computer based on the active signal.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

receiving, by a fifth computer, the active signal; and

enabling, by the fifth computer, one or more output ports of the fifth computer based on the active signal.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

forwarding, by the fifth computer, the active signal to a sixth computer; and

enabling, by the sixth computer, one or more output ports of the sixth computer based on the active signal.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein disabling, by the second computer, the one or more output ports of the second computer and enabling, by the fourth computer, the one or more output ports of the fourth computer happen concurrently.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein generating, by the active computer system determining module, the active signal comprises generating the active signal in response to receiving the first computer system health signal.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating, by the first computer, the first computer system health signal comprises de-asserting a pre-existing first computer system health signal.

11. A system comprising:

a first computer system including a first computers;

a second computer operatively connected to the first computer; and

an active computer system processor operatively connected to both the first computer and the second computer,

wherein the first computer is configured to:

receive a second computer health signal from the second computer indicating a fault in the second computer; and

generate a first computer system health signal, wherein the first computer system health signal indicates a fault in at least one of the first computer and the second computer;

wherein the active computer system processor is configured to:

receive the first computer system health signal; and

generate a standby signal based on the first computer system health signal;

wherein the second computer is configured to:

receive the standby signal; and

disable one or more output ports of the second computer based on the standby signal;

wherein the first computer system further comprises a plurality of subsidiary computers, and the subsidiary computers are configured in a daisy chain to communicate the first computer system health signal from a first of the subsidiary computers to a last of the subsidiary computers in a sequential order; and

wherein the first computer system health signal is communicated over the daisy chain via a wired communication channel wherein each of the subsidiary computers is further configured with an input port and an output port, and the input port receives the first computer system health signal and communicates the first computer system health signal to the output port via the wired communication channel.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a third computer operatively connected to the first and second computers,

wherein the second computer is further configured to:

forward the standby signal to the third computer; and

wherein the third computer is configured to:

receive the standby signal; and

disable one or more output ports of the third computer based on the standby signal.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the first computer is configured to receive the second computer health signal over a first communication channel;

the second computer is configured to receive the standby signal over a second communication channel; and

the first communication channel and the second communication channel are different communication channels.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first communication channel comprises an Ethernet communication channel.

15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a fourth computer operatively connected to the active computer system processor,

wherein the active computer system processor is further configured to:

generate an active signal; and

wherein the fourth computer is configured to:

receive the active signal; and

enable one or more output ports of the fourth computer based on the active signal.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising a fifth computer operatively connected to the active computer system processor and the fourth computer,

wherein the fifth computer is configured to:
