Abstract

An expandable assembly for insertion into an intervertebral space is presented. The assembly, in particular aspects, includes an elongate body comprising an upper portion and a lower portion. The assembly may include an expander that is sized and shaped for insertion between the upper portion and lower portion, thereby selectively expanding the upper portion away from the lower portion. The elongate body may also include one or more bone graft windows.

Claims (11)

1. An expandable cage for insertion into an intervertebral space, comprising:

a cage body having an upper portion and a lower portion, the upper portion having an upper bone contact surface and an upper portion lower surface, the lower portion having a lower bone contact surface and a lower portion upper surface, wherein the upper portion and the lower portion each define a window configured to permit bone growth therethrough

an elongate expander positioned substantially therebetween the upper portion lower surface and the lower portion upper surface, the elongate expander comprising a feature for receipt of a means for actuating longitudinal translation of the elongate expander, wherein longitudinal translation of the elongate expander in a proximal direction causes the expander to act upon portions of the upper portion and the lower portion to expand the cage body by separating the upper portion from the lower portion; and

wherein the expandable cage comprises a tapered distal end tapering from a proximal portion to the distal end and extending at least partially beyond a distal end of the upper and lower portions when the expandable cage is in an unexpanded position.

2. The expandable cage of claim 1 , wherein portions of the elongate expander are complementarily shaped with portions of the upper portion and portions of the lower portion, whereby when the expander is moved proximally, the expander acts on the upper portion and the lower portion to expand the cage body.

3. The expandable cage of claim 1 , wherein a proximal portion of the cage body defines an aperture in communication with an internal passage defined by the upper portion lower surface and the lower portion upper surface, whereby a bone growth material may be placed into the internal passage via the aperture post expansion of the cage body.

4. The expandable cage of claim 3 , further comprising a set screw within the aperture to retain the expander in an expanded position.

5. The expandable cage of claim 3 , wherein the cage body defines one or more windows in communication with the internal passage.

6. The expandable cage of claim 5 , wherein the expander defines one or more windows.

7. The expandable cage of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the one or more windows of the expander substantially aligns with at least one of the one or more windows of the cage body.

8. The expandable cage of claim 1 , wherein an insertion tool moves the expander from the first position to the second position by pulling the expander proximally.
